Clippings: Son inspires father to go the distance

I always thought I’d be able to tell folks exactly where I was when I decided to run my first long-distance race. You know, one of those sobering, psych-yourself-up moments you never forget.

Turned out to be quite the anti-climax, really. We were riding in the car around four months ago when our son, Mark, blurted out, “Dad, we’re running the half-marathon in Burlington this May.”

Oh.

“Thanks for signing me up, son,” I believe I muttered under my breath. “Did you put me down for the firing squad, too?”

Paging William Conlon: Cornwall teen to view politics in D.C.

Posted on June 7, 2010 |
By John Flowers

web_willconlon.jpg

CORNWALL — William Conlon got his first up-close-and-personal taste of politics last month when he won election as next year’s 11th-grade class president at Middlebury Union High School.

It will be an abbreviated term for the new office-holder, but that’s OK. That’s because Conlon will be leaving MUHS next January to spend five months on arguably the biggest political stage in the world — Washington, D.C., where Conlon will spend about five months as a U.S. Senate page representing the state of Vermont.

Governor lets school bill become law

Posted on June 7, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas on Thursday allowed a voluntary school consolidation bill to become law without his signature.

Douglas, a Middlebury Republican, declined to sign bill H.66 because he said it did not go far enough in promoting the merger of education resources during an era of rising school budgets and declining enrollment in Vermont.

Douglas reflects on final session, legacy and next chapter

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — It’s early June during an election year in Vermont, which means Gov. James Douglas should be in full campaign mode right now.

But for the first time in more than three decades, the Middlebury Republican finds himself on the sidelines of a crowded candidates’ field that he helped populate with three simple words last August: “I’m not running.”

Douglas recently sat down at the Addison Independent offices to reflect on the recently concluded Legislative session — his last in the governor’s office — his legacy, and what he might do in the future.

ADDISON COUNTY — The annual spring building boom in Addison County and beyond is being at least slightly tempered by the financial impact of new federal regulations requiring contractors to take more precautions in performing renovation projects in older buildings containing lead paint.

While most acknowledge the new rules will make houses and other buildings safer, others say the whole picture was not taken into consideration before the rules took effect.

Shoreham to vote on future of buildings

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — Shoreham voters will soon get a chance to decide whether the town should build new municipal offices or incorporate them into a Newton Academy re-build that would also include a community center.

Plans call for the Shoreham selectboard to prepare a list of three options to address the town’s quest for more municipal office space and to potentially fill the void left by the April 7 burning of historic Newton Academy on School Street.

Those options, according to Shoreham selectboard Chairman Paul Saenger, will include:
