Welch: Trump should face obstruction of justice probe

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Peter Welch called for Congressional hearings on specific findings in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections. But the Vermont Democrat stopped short of endorsing impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for allegedly trying to obstruct the investigation.

Welch, Vermont’s lone U.S. House representative, shared his views on the Mueller report — and what might come next — during a Tuesday phone interview with the Addison Independent.

MIDDLEBURY — George Brewer puts a lot of miles on his trusty 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle. There’s nothing quite like the freedom one feels cruising in the open air, drinking in the countryside amid the controlled growl of a well-tuned engine, he believes.

But six years ago, motorcycling took on a new, deeper meaning for Brewer.

Neat Repeats moving to new Rt. 7 location

MIDDLEBURY — The Neat Repeats Resale Shop will soon move from its longtime home at 3 Bakery Lane in downtown Middlebury into a more spacious building at 1428 Route 7 South. Pending the signing of a lease, Neat Repeats officials plan to open in the new location during the first week of June.

The 1428 Route 7 South spot was recently vacated by Quilters’ Corner at Middlebury Sew-N-Vac, which in January set up shop a mile or two north in The Centre shopping plaza in a space next to Supercuts.

How many schools do we need? ACSD considers the future

MIDDLEBURY — Almost 100 Addison Central School District residents turned out at an April 17 forum in Middlebury to help shape a long-range plan for the district’s many buildings. The plan could ultimately recommend closure of one or more schools within the ACSD in order to reflect declining enrollment and the rising costs of public education.

MUHS, MUMS facilities also require upkeep

MIDDLEBURY — The upcoming decisions about the long-term future of Addison Central School District’s buildings extend beyond the seven member elementary schools in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge.

ACSD Board Chairman Peter Conlon warned that taxpayers will also be asked to invest in the Middlebury Union middle and high school buildings.

The timing of that investment has yet to be decided.

Kids and seniors bridge the age gap with games

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School 6th-grader Heath Odell and a handful of his classmates darted to the Elderly Services Inc. music room last Friday morning, where they each picked an elderly partner whom they led to the center of the welcoming space.

While musician Judd Markowski squeezed out a lively tune on his accordion, the children tenderly clasped their partners’ hands and gently guided them in dance while seniors too frail to join in beamed from chairs along the sideline.
