Orwell to hold revote on school governance

ORWELL — Orwell school officials are projecting a June revote on the question of whether the community should join five Rutland County towns in forming a “Slate Valley Unified Union School District” that would be governed by a single board presiding over a global education budget for all of the schools in the new union.

Wright Park considered for bird protection project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Area Land Trust Executive Carl Robinson told the Middlebury selectboard Tuesday about a proposal for a habitat management project to help sustain some dwindling “state and regional priority bird species” at Wright Park.

Robinson cited the golden-winged warbler as an example of the species that the project would help protect at the park.

Update sought to Middlebury RR bridges project

MIDDLEBURY — Jim Gish, community liaison for the Middlebury rail bridges replacement project, on Tuesday updated the Middlebury selectboard on the upcoming $40 million project.

Among other things, Gish reported on efforts to relocate the Addison County Transit Resources bus stop from Merchants Row to the north end of South Pleasant Street, and the scheduled start, this fall, of work on a temporary road from Water Street to the Battell Block parking area, and a drainage system that will be built under the former Lazarus building site on Main Street.

Meet the MUMS principal candidate today

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union officials have confirmed that Leicester resident and current Rutland Middle School Principal Kristin Holsman-Francoeur is the lone finalist for the top administrative post at Middlebury Union Middle School.

The UD-3 school board is expected to meet next week to consider Holsman-Francoeur’s candidacy. She would replace current MUMS Principal Patrick Reen, who is leaving this summer to take the job of superintendent of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union in Bristol.

Dunne outlines formula for economic recovery

MIDDLEBURY — Hartland Democrat and gubernatorial candidate Matt Dunne is pitching an economic recovery plan that he said would nurture growing businesses, create new jobs, weatherize aging apartment buildings and reduce the state’s carbon footprint, all at the same time.

Dunne shared his plan, and positions on other issues ranging from solar siting to health care, during a far-ranging interview at the Addison Independent on Thursday, May 5.

A bottle of water.

An inexpensive Chinese lantern.

An old leather vest.

A small, crocheted angel.

A far cry from the distinguished portraits, vivid watercolors and delicate craftwork often on display at the Jackson Gallery.

Middlebury powerhouse assessment sought

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury is pursuing a second environmental assessment of the historic powerhouse structure at the base of the downtown Otter Creek falls to determine what, if any, cleanup will be needed at the site the town acquired from a local land trust several years ago.

The town is currently requesting proposals from four pre-qualified firms to complete a “Phase II Environmental Site Assessment” for the powerhouse property, also known as the David Page Cotton Mill site.

MUHS's Beauchamp wins coveted Gates scholarship

MIDDLEBURY — Some people become defined by tragedy and are unable to overcome it.

But Nick Beauchamp continues to draw inspiration from the worst night of his life — Sept. 10, 2005. That’s when his dad died in a car crash in New Jersey.

Beauchamp was only 6 years old at the time, but the events will forever be etched in his memory.

“My whole family huddled in the living room, torrents of tears sweeping through the room,” he wrote in an essay about that soul-draining day.
