County towns could get help feeding kids this summer

MIDDLEBURY — State and local human services providers are trying to recruit more Addison County communities to host summer meal programs to make sure children from low-income families continue to have access to nutritious breakfasts and lunches when school is out of session.

Fish project hooks Mary Hogan pupils on science

Health care reform makes some gains; sign-up deadline looms

ADDISON COUNTY — Two key Addison County lawmakers involved in the state’s health care reform effort said they are pleased with Vermonters’ response to the new health insurance exchange and conceded that long-awaited financial details about the transition to a single-payer system probably won’t be available until early next year.

That was the word this week from Sen. Claire Ayer of Addison and Rep. Mike Fisher of Lincoln, both Democrats.

Brush drafts petition to revote on Middlebury town office project

MIDDLEBURY — Resident Howard “Skip” Brush confirmed on Tuesday that he will spearhead a petition drive to force reconsideration of Middlebury’s Town Meeting Day vote in favor of a $6.5 million plan to build new town offices and a recreation center.

The cold, snowy days just keep piling up during this, the seemingly endless winter of 2013-2014. The records keep falling with the temperatures as the meteorologists tell us that this has been one of the coldest winters on record since the late 1800s. Not a record worth celebrating as I fog up the window on the front door of our house wondering — now in mid-March — if I can walk to the mailbox and back without catching frostbite.

Weybridge tops energy challenge

Chittenden bus strike would affect some ACTR riders

MIDDLEBURY — A potential strike by Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA) drivers would have an impact on the Addison County Transit Resources’ Burlington Link Express that buses riders between Middlebury and Burlington.

As of Friday afternoon, CCTA drivers are slated to go on strike as of Monday, March 17, after having rejected the latest contract offer.

Shoreham considers solar power co-op

SHOREHAM — A Shoreham couple is trying to organize a local “community-owned solar cooperative” through which residents could become investors. The payoff for investors, they say, would be net-metering credits applied against their monthly electric utility bills.

Lawmakers lament school tax hikes

MIDDLEBURY — While the Vermont Legislature did not convene last week, lawmakers received a homework assignment doled out by area voters on Town Meeting Day: Do something about rising education property taxes.

Vermont residents voted down 35 of approximately 250 school budgets that were on communities’ town meeting dockets on March 3 and 4 — the largest number of failed spending plans since the advent of Act 68 in 2005, according to Rep. David Sharpe, D-Bristol.
