MIDDLEBURY — Dick Thodal has spent that past 28 years behind a video camera, giving area residents a chance to star in their own talk shows, comedy segments, cultural programs and political theater — all broadcast on Middlebury Community Television (MCTV) Channel 15.

Now Thodal, 69, will soon get a chance to headline his own reality show: His much-deserved retirement, and there won’t be any cameras rolling.

Middlebury police probing phony $100 bills

Posted on February 16, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police believe they have pinpointed the source of some phony $100 bills passed at three local businesses on Feb. 10.

Middlebury Police Sgt. Mike Christopher said the bills in question are of the same size and coloring of a real $100 banknote, but are clearly marked as being non-negotiable. The words “For motion picture use only,” in capital letters, appear to the right of the depiction of Benjamin Franklin, as well as across the top of the back of the note.

MIDDLEBURY — Sammy Barnes and Greg Alexander have been willing to hand over the keys to their business if they believe new ownership can take it to the next level.

Area lawmakers pan Scott's education funding plan

Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Local legislators on Monday criticized Gov. Phil Scott’s proposal that school districts budget the same amount of spending for fiscal year 2018 as they are for this year, saying such a move would unfairly restrict local budget planners and could run counter to a 20-year-old Vermont Supreme Court ruling on education funding.

STARKSBORO — Christiane Kokubo has seen many Hispanic people, most of them migrant workers, visit the Open Door Clinic (ODC) in Middlebury to receive free health care services. Kokubo, a communications specialist with ODC, never ceases to be touched by the stories of perseverance and isolation that these migrant workers convey to her while receiving vital medical attention.

MIDDLEBURY — Victor Nuovo withdrew from his professorial duties at Middlebury College 23 years ago, but he has packed enough educational and intellectual activity in his golden years to fill a second résumé.

At an age when a lot of retirees would be happy to make it onto the golf course every once in a while, Nuovo, 85, has been playing his “back nine” in the storied halls of Oxford University, researching, compiling and editing books on the great 17th-century philosopher John Locke.
