Some Act 46 districts given reprieve

BRISTOL — In addition to talk of a plastic ban before the Legislature, lawmakers and constituents at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the Bristol American Legion discussed education governance consolidation and school construction aid, early childcare services, and promoting greater use of electric vehicles.

Abortion foes offer feedback on bill H.57

BRISTOL — As was the case at last week’s Legislative Breakfast, abortion legislation was a hot topic at this Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Bristol.

Folks weighed in on H.57, a bill that would recognize reproductive choice as a “fundamental freedom” and would keep public entities from interfering with, or restricting, a woman’s right to end her pregnancy.

Career Center offering voters no spending hike

MIDDLEBURY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center board next month will present county voters with a 2019-2020 budget proposal of $3,468,338, which reflects a $186 decline in total spending (compared to this year) for vocational and technical education for area students.

Salisbury couple begin new era for Inn on the Green

MIDDLEBURY — Chris and Chelsea Griggs got their first taste of the hospitality industry a few years ago. They had purchased a “fixer-upper” on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury, which they lovingly rehabbed and began renting out to help subsidize their investment.

But the experience turned into something much more than an income earning vacation rental.

Abortion bill spurs emotional debate

VERGENNES — Activists turned out in force at Monday’s legislative breakfast at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, many, but not all, of them to deride a House bill they claimed would expand the use of abortion in Vermont.

But local lawmakers however rejected their claim, saying bill H.57 would simply recognize reproductive choice as a “fundamental freedom” and keep public entities from interfering with, or restricting, women’s existing right in Vermont to end pregnancies.

State targets Salisbury fish hatchery for closure

SALISBURY — Faced with a $500,000 budget shortfall in fiscal year 2020, the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife (VDFW) is recommending closing the Salisbury Fish Culture Station at 646 Lake Dunmore Road, a facility that employs four full-time workers, attracts more than 6,000 visitors each year, and plays a key role in the state’s formidable trout breeding program that attracts anglers and fuels the state economy.

New herbicide bill in the offing

VERGENNES — Strong emotions were on display at at Monday’s legislative breakfast at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes when the topic turned to abortion. But the half-dozen lawmakers and several dozen citizen also talked about other issues.

Other discussion at Monday’s legislative breakfast focused on:

•  A proposal for a ban the use of glyphosate, a chemical used in some herbicides. Addison resident John Ball called it an “extraordinarily toxic chemical not only for plants, but humans as well.”

Makers get to work in a new facility at Hannaford Career Center

MIDDLEBURY — Nora Swan is an experienced hat-maker, but last Thursday saw her go “back to school” to hone her skills.

The school: The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, which recently launched an Addison County “Makery” that gives creative people like Swan a venue in which to test new ideas using a wide assortment of tools and machines that might otherwise be beyond their financial means.
