MIDDLEBURY — “Take 120 pounds of carrots, tomatoes, lettuce and apples, and I’ll see you in three months.”

It’s a pretty unconventional prescription for a physician to give to a patient, but 45 county residents will be given that kind of direction by their family doctors beginning next year as part of a new wellness program spearheaded by the local nonprofit “Acorn,” aka the Addison County Relocalization Network.

MIDDLEBURY — People tend to make headlines — for all the wrong reasons — when they’re arrested, convicted and sent to jail.

MIDDLEBURY — Members of Addison County’s Jewish community are showing solidarity — and considering new security measures at their North Pleasant Street meeting place — in the wake of an Oct. 27 mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 worshippers dead and six injured.

The suspect in the case — 46-year-old Robert Bowers — was arraigned on Monday and charged with 29 felony counts, including 11 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder and 11 counts of obstruction of the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death.

ADDISON COUNTY — Recent elections for the two state Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore have been more like coronations than contests, with incumbent Democrats easily finishing on top.

But an open seat and the participation of two well-known independent candidates in an overall field of six have made this year’s Addison County state Senate race an intriguing competition that has been drawing statewide attention.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s a storm that many Addison County residents had hoped would rage on, unabated.

But unable to extend their lease in the historic Stone Mill building in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow, Storm Café owners John and Beth Hughes have decided to end the restaurant’s 25-year run after the last meal clears the kitchen on Nov. 11.

“It’s really hard,” John Hughes said during a recent interview. “If I could stay in this location, I wouldn’t be done.”
