Shoreham seeking funding for town shed

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham selectboard is aggressively searching for grants to help defray the cost of a salt-sand shed that they said is urgently needed to ensure the community can effectively keep its roads clear and safe during winter weather.

Shoreham currently stores the bulk of its salt reserves in Bridport, which has generously offered space in its shed. Shoreham facilities can now only store around a tandem truck load’s worth of salt at this point, according to Selectman Loren Wood. There are roughly 62 miles of road in the town of Shoreham.

Parlour seeks to become a cut above the rest

Well, the stars have finally aligned. The duo on Aug. 30 opened “Parlour,” a full-service beauty salon and spa that makes good use of their respective talents.

Middlebury to buy new ladder truck for fire department

County bags major grant to steer youth away from drugs & alcohol

MIDDLEBURY — A new grant will direct more than $600,000 to Addison County over the next five years for programs aimed at preventing local teens and young adults from abusing alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.

After years of fighting the opiate epidemic in Vermont at the point where people need help cleaning up, one local leader charged with spending the new grant money is happy to open a new front in the battle.

“Let’s really (attack) the root causes,” said Kate McGowan, executive director of the United Way of Addison County.

MIDDLEBURY — The causes of multiple sclerosis (MS) remain somewhat of a mystery, but research is producing new treatments and medications that are allowing patients to maintain better quality of life.

“Everyone has their own version of it,” said Dr. Andrew Solomon, a UVM Medical Center neurologist and director of institution’s Multiple Sclerosis Center. “It’s a combination of genetics and environmental triggers. There have been hundreds of genes that have been associated with MS.”

MIDDLEBURY — Mike Nienow thought the persistent pain in his left leg was simply the result of a bad pair of clogs, the footwear of choice for culinary school students at the Patricia Hannaford Career Center.

“It started with the back of my knee; I felt some weird pressure,” Nienow recalled.

But being a bullet-proof 17-year-old with a busy school schedule and social life, he didn’t think too much of it at first.

Then the pain became persistent enough that he switched to a new pair of shoes.
