Tractor Supply eyes Middlebury for new store

MIDDLEBURY — Tractor Supply, which bills itself as “the largest operator of rural lifestyle stores in the United States,” is proposing to build a 19,000-square-foot store off Foote Street in Middlebury, on a 6.5-acre parcel located behind the A&W Restaurant.

Downtown Middlebury bus stop is moving closer to college

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) is preparing to move its Middlebury bus hub from South Pleasant Street to Academy Street in November.

The planned switch comes after several weeks of discussion between ACTR and town officials about where to put Middlebury’s central bus stop — which serves as a nexus for buses and riders traveling within Addison County, along with points south and north. It needs to be shifted in advance of an upcoming, three-year effort to replace the Main Street and Merchants Row bridges.

Local man uses Suboxone to help him kick addiction habit

BRISTOL — Ethan was involved in an accident three years ago that continues to threaten his health, even though his physical wounds healed a long time ago.

Part of the “cure” at the time — some heavy-duty narcotic painkillers — has become the illness: An addiction that led to overdoses that almost took the young man’s life.

“When you first wake up in the morning, you’re thinking: ‘How can I get my fix so I can function?” Ethan told the Addison Independent of his darkest hours.

Orwell challenged to fit into new district

ORWELL — Orwell’s three delegates to the Slate Valley Modified Unified Union School District will participate in an organizational meeting of the newly formed panel on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Fair Haven Union High School.

Vermont Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe will preside over the meeting, at which the board will deal with nine agenda items, ranging from electing a temporary presiding officer to establishing a date for the district’s annual meeting.

Middlebury currency from 19th century sells for $64K

MIDDLEBURY — The National Bank of Middlebury has built a solid reputation for sound fiscal management since its founding in 1831.

But a small error made by the bank 142 years ago has paid a few currency collectors some very high dividends.

The rare, misprinted $10 bank note printed by the National Bank of Middlebury back in 1875 just sold for a whopping $64,625 to an undisclosed buyer at an Aug. 3 auction at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

Middlebury's Isley Library seeking $9.6 million for big expansion

MIDDLEBURY — Ilsley Public Library trustees have hired a consultant to determine how much money could be raised locally to underwrite a major expansion and renovation of the library — a project tentatively estimated at around $9.6 million.

The board’s decision to commission a fundraising feasibility study comes on the heels of a newly released report that recommends removing the library’s two most recent additions and erecting a new, 14,000-square-foot structure onto the back of the original, 1924 Ilsley building.

Four little words repeatedly passed from child to adult since humans learned how to speak.

Those four words will get quite a workout through Oct. 15 at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, which is showcasing work from some of the state’s finest authors and illustrators of children’s books.

Middlebury earns final federal permission for rail bridges fix, Big Dig is on

MIDDLEBURY — The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has determined that a planned $52 million replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges will have “no significant impact” on local residents, wildlife and the environment.

That gives the green light for the project to proceed as scheduled next spring.
