Man in MUMS case seeks return of his guns

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County resident whose firearms were confiscated by police in order to keep them from a boy who had allegedly planned to shoot up Middlebury Union Middle School last month has regained access to his guns and could have them returned to his home as soon as this week.

New FCC rule could hurt local access TV

MIDDLEBURY — Managers of Vermont’s cable access channels are warning that a new rule being pitched by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) could significantly affect their revenues to a point where some stations might have to pare back services significantly, or even close down.

If that happens it would certainly restrict the public’s ability to keep tabs on their local government.

Rachel Lee Cummings to succeed Bob Thorn at CSAC

MIDDLEBURY — Rachel Lee Cummings, former chief operating officer at Age Well, will in February begin her role as the new executive director of the Counseling Service of Addison County.

She will succeed Robert Thorn (pictured), CSAC’s longtime administrative leader, who’s retiring after almost four decades of service.

ACSD budget impact becomes clear; Cornwall to see 9-percent tax increase

MIDDLEBURY — State aid information released within the past week by the Vermont Department of Taxes is finally giving Addison Central School District (ACSD) officials a better sense of how Middlebury-area taxpayers could be affected by pre-K-12 education spending during fiscal year 2020.

And the early forecast is that residents in the seven ACSD-member towns could see education property tax rates ranging from a decline of a quarter-penny in Ripton to a 9.27-cent hike in Cornwall, according to information released at Monday’s ACSD board meeting.

Annual legislative breakfast series to kick off on Jan. 28

ADDISON COUNTY — The 2019 legislative breakfast series will kick off on Monday, Jan. 28, in Bridport and will feature an appearance by Gov. Phil Scott at the Middlebury American Legion Hall on March 18.

Lead sponsors of the breakfast series will again be Bridport Grange No. 303 and the Addison County Farm Bureau.

Open Door Clinic wins grants, plans for the future

MIDDLEBURY — The Open Door Clinic (ODC) in Middlebury enters 2019 on a high note, with two recent grant awards and a strategic plan that will sharpen the focus of the free medical service for the next three years.

The awards include a $20,000 Ben & Jerry’s Foundation “Vermont Economic Justice” grant, and a $15,000 financial commitment from the Walter Cerf Community Fund.

Cornwall subdivision plan is reduced to 10 units

CORNWALL — Applicants for a major new subdivision in West Cornwall have filed a revised plan with the town calling for 10 new residential units instead of the 19 originally requested early last year.

The Cornwall Development Review Board on Thursday, Jan. 10, will review a preliminary plan by Beaver Brook Properties LLC to create a 14-lot subdivision that would ultimately host 10 homes on a small portion of a former 166-acre farm located directly northeast of the intersection of Route 74 and North Bingham Street.

HOPE ready for building renovations

MIDDLEBURY — People who work at and receive services through the Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Community Services Building at 282 Boardman St. face around three months of construction upheaval. But officials of the social services nonprofit believe the payoff will make the temporary inconveniences worthwhile.

Workers on Jan. 10 are scheduled to begin more than $700,000 in renovations to the 20-year-old structure, all aimed at making the building more comfortable and client-friendly.

Cornwall revises zoning rules

CORNWALL — Cornwall town officials are trying to make it easier for development plans to be submitted and reviewed, and to enable applicants to better shape their building proposals to fit the topography and character of individual neighborhoods.

The Cornwall Planning Commission on Jan. 16 will hold a public hearing to get feedback on major revisions to the town’s 2008 zoning bylaw and subdivision regulations that reflect these aims.
