Fire on Friday claimed a Route 22A home in Bridport

BRIDPORT — Investigators are still sorting out the cause of a fire this past Friday in Bridport that caused significant damage to a Route 22A home owned by Mark and Heidi Prime.

It was at around 5:30 p.m. on March 18 that Bridport firefighters were toned out to the fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief Chris Gordon. The fire originated in the attic of the two-story home and burned very hot, due in part to cedar shingles on the roof that held the heat inside the structure, according to Gordon.

Porter Medical Center CEO resigns after doctors pass 'no-confidence' vote

MIDDLEBURY — After nine months on the job, Porter Medical Center Board President and CEO Lynn Boggs resigned on Friday afternoon, following a notice to the Porter Medical Center board and administration that the Medical Staff had met Tuesday night and had issued a vote of “no-confidence” in Boggs.

Upon receiving the medical staff’s announcement on Friday morning and Boggs’ resignation later that day, the board appointed Dr. Fred Kniffin to serve as acting president and CEO.

Vermont Green Line tests move to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A group planning to bring hydro and wind power from upstate New York via cable under Lake Champlain and into the New England grid are sizing up Middlebury’s industrial park as a potential site for a high-voltage converter station in case a site in New Haven falls through.

St. Mary's School in Middlebury to close

MIDDLEBURY — Hit by the same trend of declining enrollment that is sapping public school districts throughout Vermont, St. Mary’s Catholic School in Middlebury will officially close its doors on June 15, the final day of classes.

Father William Beaudin, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, confirmed the imminent closing of the school during an interview on Friday morning. He had previously shared the news with school parents, faculty and St. Mary’s parishioners.

Turning Point Center's move nixed; August deadline nears

MIDDLEBURY — The Turning Point Center of Addison County (TPC) has around five months in which to pin down a new headquarters to host its services for people recovering from addiction. And the agency’s deadline got a little more dire on Monday after the Middlebury Development Review Board rejected the organization’s plan to relocate from the Marble Works to a single-family home at 91 Court St.

Migrant worker charged with three felonies

PANTON — A local migrant worker pleaded innocent on March 11 in Rutland District Court, criminal division, to three felony charges — including kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault — stemming from a Feb. 18 incident in Panton during which he allegedly held a woman against her will and forced her to have intercourse with him.

The defendant in the case is 25-year-old Gustavo Perez-Lopez, who is currently being held without bail at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland.

U.S. Forest Service to close Middlebury Office

MIDDLEBURY — The United States Forest Service (USFS) headquarters on Route 7 in Middlebury will be vacated and sold within the next three years, as the federal government looks to consolidate some of its resources throughout the country.

This news was confirmed on Tuesday by USFS Ranger Christopher Mattrick, who manages the Rochester/Middlebury district of the Green Mountain National Forest. Mattrick disclosed the news as part of a March 8 update on local USFS activities to the new Middlebury selectboard.
