Hospital, nonprofit launch a community health effort

MIDDLEBURY — Michele Butler Gilbert has spent more than two decades as a personal fitness trainer, helping her Middlebury-area clients adopt effective exercise and dietary habits.

She’s now the motivator-in-chief for all Addison County residents — particularly the young and elderly — to adopt healthy lifestyles aimed at reducing their chances of needing extensive medical care in the future.

Upgrades loom for Middlebury parks; public input sought

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area residents have two more opportunities to comment on proposed re-designs of Triangle Park and a new public gathering spot at the former Lazarus Department Store location off Printer’s Alley.

The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Middlebury selectboard’s regularly scheduled meeting, and on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Middlebury municipal building at 77 Main St.

MUHS student publishes a novel for young readers

MIDDLEBURY — Sixteen-year-old Joseph Findlay has always loved writing.

The Middlebury resident developed an affinity for the craft as a second-grader. He’d write stories for the fun of it, building a plot around his characters only to leave them hanging in mid-adventure after having suddenly moved on to another project.

Children can have short attention spans.

But at the tender age of 14, Findlay decided it was finally time to give one of his literary dramas a denouement.

MIDDLEBURY — Nick Stewart has already had a lot of adventures and career twists for a man of 35. His ambition and wanderlust have taken him from his hometown of Goshen, to the frothy Atlantic coast of Maine, to the tropical paradise of Hawaii, before returning to his beloved Green Mountain State two years ago.

The one constant in his career has been a love for working with people. And he’s doing a lot of that right now in Middlebury, as the town’s newest police officer.

Potential new players emerge on Middlebury hydro scene

Community Barn offers $500K for college's Stone Mill

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously agreed to waive the town’s right of first refusal to acquire the “Stone Mill” building at 3 Mill St., thus freeing Middlebury College to sell the historic structure to Community Barn Ventures (CBV) for a sum of $500,000.

Rough Cut restaurant closes after one-year run

MIDDLEBURY — The Rough Cut restaurant has closed its doors at 51 Main St. in Middlebury after a one-year run, with co-founder Ben Wells saying the enterprise simply wasn’t making enough money to survive — even with a rent subsidy from Middlebury College.

Wells also cited the challenges of juggling family and professional commitments.

Baser shares thoughts on election defeat

BRISTOL — Rep. Fred Baser, R-Bristol, won’t request a recount of votes cast in the Nov. 6 Addison-4 House race. He chalked up his defeat to effective campaigning on the part of his challengers along with what he believes was a statewide anti-GOP sentiment heading into a general election that saw three Addison County Republicans turned out of office.
