Harvey Smith tops Ed McGuire in Addison-5 House race

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven, won re-election to a sixth term representing Addison-5 in the Vermont House on Tuesday after defeating Democrat challenger Ed McGuire of New Haven, 1,145-959.

Smith, 67, is a lifelong farmer and is in his second stint representing Addison-5, a district that includes the towns of New Haven, Bridport and Weybridge.

Lanpher, Clark re-elected as Vergennes-area lawmakers

VERGENNES — Incumbent Reps. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes, and Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, easily won re-election to their respective House seats representing the Addison-3 district amid heavy voting in Tuesday’s General Election.

Lanpher, 56, was the top vote-getter in securing her third consecutive term representing the communities of Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham. She finished with 2,635 votes, compared to 2,355 for Clark, who secured his fifth consecutive two-year term.

After winning re-election, Rep. Jewett plans run for majority leader

RIPTON — Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, comfortably won his contest for a fifth consecutive term representing the Addison-2 House district, defeating independent challenger Tim Ryan by a 1,400-882 margin in voting on Tuesday.

And after the ballots were counted, Jewett confirmed to the Addison Independent that he will run for the post of House Majority Leader when his party caucuses on Dec. 8. Jewett currently serves as House Majority Whip. Democrats maintained their sizable majority in the Vermont House amid heavy voter turnout in the Nov. 6 General Election.

County trash district spending budgeted to rise

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) directors on Nov. 15 will seek public feedback on a proposed 2013 annual budget of $2,667,844. The spending plan reflects a 3-percent increase largely driven by the creation of some new savings accounts designed to help the district meet the requirements of Act 148, a major new recycling law that will begin to sweep the state in 2014.

HOPE seeks donations for those needing winter fuel

MIDDLEBURY — Officials at the organization Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) are bracing for what they believe will be a substantial spike in requests for assistance from area residents unable to pay their fuel and utility bills.

As of the end of September, HOPE was more than 50-percent shy of meeting its $128,000 donation goal to help people facing electricity shut-offs and/or at risk of seeing their fuel oil tanks go dry. This is assistance accorded to people who have exhausted their own resources and governmental assistance programs.

Black Sheep founder to launch tavern in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Local restaurateur and chef Michel Mahe on Oct. 31 confirmed his plans to open an as-yet-unnamed, new tavern in the former Jackson’s on the River space at 7 Bakery Lane in Middlebury.

Pending the signing of a lease and the construction of a 309-square-foot addition to accommodate a handicap-accessible restroom, the new restaurant would become the fourth in Mahe’s growing culinary empire. He already owns the very successful Black Sheep Bistro in Vergennes, the Bobcat Café in Bristol and the Bearded Frog in Shelburne.

MIDDLEBURY — Former Ripton resident and Middlebury College graduate Randy Brock has worked to influence state policy as the Vermont Auditor of Accounts and as a state senator.

Now he wants to become Vermont’s chief executive. To that end, the Swanton Republican is taking on incumbent Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Putney, on Nov. 6.
