Weybridge decides on use for settlement

WEYBRIDGE — Around 150 Weybridge voters turned out at a special town meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25, to earmark $475,980 in embezzlement-related insurance settlement funds to a variety of municipal uses, with the lion’s share going to the creation of a “major equipment fund” for future substantial purchases. And residents declined the selectboard’s invitation to use $50,000 of the money as a property tax rebate.

Small businesses gird for transition to health insurance marketplace

ADDISON COUNTY — State officials have spent almost three years tuning up Vermont Health Connect (VHC), a new insurance marketplace designed to make sure all Vermonters have access to “quality, affordable” health care coverage.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, many Vermonters and small businesses will start taking the new system — triggered by the federal Affordable Care Act — for a test drive.

Shashok makes 'Caroline's Dream' a thriving reality

MIDDLEBURY — Like many teens and young adults, Susan Shashok back in the day found herself in a lengthy battle against acne. With it came an arduous and unfortunately fruitless search for a product to improve her skin condition.

“I tried everything that I could,” recalled Shashok. “It just didn’t work for me. I had to use a lot of harsh chemicals, and it dried out my skin or made it all red.”

Porter Medical Center nurses to vote on forming a union

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s combined total of around 130 nurses could vote as soon as next month on whether to form a union.

“I am confident it has a good chance,” Porter Hospital RN Alice Leo, one of the union organizers, said on Monday. “Nurses are feeling good about this, that it is the right thing to do.”

Leo cited staffing concerns as the motivating factor behind the union drive. She said many nurses are concerned that some units are shorthanded.

United Way boosts its 2013 fundraising goal

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County will kick off its 2013 campaign to raise $725,000 with its customary “Days of Caring” this Thursday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 28. It is an event that has thus far attracted 675 community volunteers who will perform dozens of helpful jobs for the various local nonprofit agencies that receive financial support through the UWAC.

Shoreland law hearing draws big crowd in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Legislature’s ongoing effort to draft a new law regulating development on shoreland lots continues to draw concern from Addison County residents, some of whom fear new regulations will emerge that will affect their property rights.

“This is a taking of property without due process… ” said one of more than 150 people who showed up at a public hearing convened in Middlebury on Thursday by the Shoreland Protection Commission.

Weybridge to decide use of embezzlement settlement funds

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents will gather at their local school this Wednesday, Sept. 25, to decide what to do with an insurance settlement of nearly half a million dollars stemming from an embezzlement case involving former Town Clerk Karen Brisson.

It was on July 18 that U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss sentenced Brisson to two years in jail, along with paying restitution, following her guilty plea to having embezzled funds from the town’s coffers over a period of at least six years.

Spaulding football is no match for Eagles

BRISTOL — Football teams who face the Mount Abraham/Vergennes Union High School teams this year know they are going to be fed dangerous doses of the team’s powerful running back tandem of Tommy Lee Hodsden and Austin Lafayette.

Visiting Spaulding was no different on Saturday, though they also got a glimpse of the Eagles’ developing passing attack, which produced two scores en route to the Eagles’  38-6 victory.

Hospital budget back in the black

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board has OK’d Porter Hospital’s request for a fiscal year 2014 budget of $69,809,477.

That spending requires a 1.4-percent increase in net revenues and a 6-percent bump in gross charges.

The budget provides further evidence of a substantial turnaround in Porter Hospital’s financial health, falls well below the state’s recommended 3-percent revenue cap, and will not force any job cuts, hospital officials said.
