Field Days a hit in spite of showers, Route 17 repairs

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days drew to a close on Aug. 11 following another run that officials called a success in spite of some rain that drenched the site during portions of three days of the annual event’s five-day span.

Jim Foster, president of the Field Days board, estimated attendance at this year’s 64th annual Field Days was around 15 percent lower than last year’s edition. During a good year (like last year), Field Days draws between 25,000 to 30,000 visits, according to Foster.

Man badly burned in truck crash on Route 116

BRISTOL — A New Hampshire man was listed in “guarded” condition with second-degree burns at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday afternoon after driving his tractor-trailer truck off Route 116 in Bristol, resulting in a fiery crash and a massive response from multiple fire departments, rescue organizations and at least one heroic witness.

Middlebury awards riverfront contract

MIDDLEBURY — At an Aug. 14 meeting, the Middlebury selectboard agreed to contract with DeBisschop Excavating to make substantial improvements to public property bordering the Otter Creek Falls in the Marble Works.

The so-called “Riverfront” project will include the construction of pathways, re-grading and landscape restoration, tree and shrub plantings and new seating and gathering opportunities with a small amphitheater-like environment, noted Middlebury Assistant Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay.

Service helps seniors stay at home

MIDDLEBURY — When Larry Carlson moved into the 25-unit Vergennes Senior Housing project on Armory Lane earlier this year, he was immediately impressed with the accommodations. But as a 71-year-old diabetic, Carlson was concerned about his ability to stay in his new apartment as his medical needs escalate to the point of sending him into the hospital.

MIDDLEBURY — Cassandra Gekas has spent the past few years lobbying state politicians for health care reform as a representative of Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG).

Now the Montpelier Democrat is seeking to become one of those being lobbied in the Vermont Statehouse — as lieutenant governor. Gekas, 30, is challenging incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Scott this November.

Illuzzi vies for auditor post

NEW HAVEN — After 32 years as a Vermont state senator, Vince Illuzzi knows the inner workings of state government like the back of his hand. It’s experience that the Derby Republican wants to put to work for Vermonters as state auditor.

Illuzzi, 58, will face Burlington Democrat Doug Hoffer for the state auditor’s post, being vacated this year by incumbent Republican Tom Salmon.

Wells Mountain Foundation awards $85K worldwide

BRISTOL — The Bristol-based Wells Mountain Foundation this month will award a combined total of $85,000 in scholarships to around 50 students worldwide. Most of the recipients have overcome personal tragedies and all have vowed to use their education to better their respective countries.

RetailVision to close; 25 Middlebury jobs to be lost

MIDDLEBURY — Magazine sales promotion company RetailVision will close its doors in Middlebury’s industrial park at the end of October, a move that will eliminate around 25 local jobs.

“We did announce last week to our employees in Vermont that we will be shutting down that office by end of October,” Stephanie Justice, chief administrative officer of RetailVision’s Florida-based corporate owner, Source Interlink Companies (SIM), said in an Aug. 9 e-mail response to the Addison Independent.
