ADDISON COUNTY — In the spring of 2006 Seth Kittredge had been in the Vermont Army National Guard for nine years and was ready to move on, take the next big steps in his life. He was ready to focus on his career; he’d just met the woman he would eventually marry.

“I was on my last enlistment, I was looking at getting out of the Guard so I could pursue my surveying career,” Kittredge recalled in a recent interview.

Then the Vergennes resident’s unit, the 131st Engineers, was activated for duty in the Iraq war.

The New Haven teen recently began sharing that love for animals with folks at the Eastview retirement community in Middlebury. She put her dog and herself through a therapy dog training, and now visits residents there and gives them the opportunity to stroke Ginger and reminisce about the pets they’d owned over the years.

“Good visit, but boy, are we old!” my college friend “Cowboy” emailed me recently after we had returned to our respective homes after our college class reunion. “Let’s not make it 20 years between connecting again.”

ADDISON COUNTY — A group of high school students from Japan that recently visited Vermont learned not just about the cultural differences between their home country and the Green Mountain State, but also got some first-hand experience and education on how Vermonters are trying to integrate more local foods into their lives.
