ANeSU teachers call off strike plans

Posted on February 10, 2011 |
By John S. McCright

BRISTOL — Students in the six Addison Northeast Supervisory Union schools were in class Wednesday, though just a few days earlier they were getting ready for an unwanted day off.

Feb. 9 was the strike date set by teachers in the five-town public school district, but the teachers called off the strike on Monday evening. They said they would finish up the school year under contract conditions that the ANeSU school boards imposed on Jan. 5 and begin negotiating a new contract that will begin next year.

Barn Collapse Shoreham Trudel.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Lightning and thunder in the middle of February?

Yes, it’s possible, said meteorologist Paul Sisson from the National Weather Service in Burlington. Though thunder snowstorms are very rare, the Northeast saw one on Saturday night. That came in the midst of a weekend of heavy snow that resulted in a few collapsed roofs at local barns

“It has been called off,” said Darren Allen, a spokesman for the Vermont-NEA teachers union, Tuesday morning. “Teachers accept (the contract) imposition, and bargaining is going forward.”

Middlebury selectmen back marketing post

Posted on January 13, 2011 |
By John S. McCright

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday endorsed the concept of providing $25,000 in town money to pay a portion of the cost of a new local events marketing coordinator who would draw out-of-towners to spend money downtown and in other local businesses that serve visitors.

The goal of coordinator would be to produce more in town revenue through increased rooms and meals tax collections than the cost of the position.

“We look forward to this being not an expenditure but an investment,” said selectboard chair John Tenny.

ANeSU teachers, board at impasse

By Tamara Hilmes and John S. McCright

BRISTOL — Representatives of the six Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school boards and of the teachers who work in those schools met into the wee hours last Thursday negotiating a contract for the current school year. By the end of the night the two sides had come to an impasse.

The school boards will meet next month to decide whether to restart negotiations or impose a contract. If they opt for the latter, the teachers will have to agree to take what the boards offer or strike.

Clippings: The games we play, lessons we learn

Posted on December 16, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

As I languidly flipped through a children’s toy catalog one morning an item caught my eye. It’s the kind of educational toy catalog that we probably get because we are members of the natural foods co-op. There were virtually none of the toys or games from my childhood — no lawn darts, no Jimmy the Greek Odds Maker Poker.

Clippings: Campaign spending obscenely high

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

Who could blame the electorate for thinking the people running to represent them in government are stinking, money-grubbing pigs? Election after election the amount of money candidates spend in their campaigns grows and grows, at a rate surely much faster than inflation.

According to the Vermont Secretary of State’s website, Republican Horace F. Graham spent the whopping sum of $28.15 to fend off a Democrat, a Progressive and a Prohibition Party candidate to win the Vermont governor’s race in 1916. Things have changed.

BRISTOL - Over the past summer a crew at the Hub teen center in Bristol has been busy expanding the skatepark, which is used by skateboarders, inline skaters, and riders of scooters and BMX bikes from around the five-town region and beyond. Thanks to the donation of many ramps and features from the town of Hinesburg and the donation of time and services from many local businesses and organizations, the skatepark has doubled in size.
