Karl Lindholm: To go — or not to go?

What do you think Alex Cora should do? What would you do in his position?

Cora is the manager of the Red Sox, the World Champion Red Sox, the on-the-field leader of the team. His performance in this role last year was impeccable, perfect, as the Red Sox won 119 games, the most ever in their long history.

“Like to talk a little bit about baseball ... and football,” George Carlin informs us at the beginning of his famous routine comparing the two sports.

It’s quite brilliant (and not a single cuss word, rare for him). You can find it easily on YouTube.

Carlin’s descriptions of baseball are rendered with a light falsetto; football on the other hand requires a somber and ominous tone.

January is Hall of Fame Season.

In the off-season, in the chill of winter, the BBWAA (Baseball Writers Association of America) selects the year’s inductees to the hallowed Hall, the Shrine, in Cooperstown — and then there’s a big party in July for their induction.

Karl Lindholm: Blame it on Gene Wise

Karl Ted Williams and Karl Lindholm CMYK.jpg

The late Gene Wise. He was my adviser in graduate school.

Gene was an intellectual historian — that doesn’t mean he was a historian who was an intellectual (though he was); no, he studied American intellectual history, the history of ideas and thinkers and so forth.

I was a full-time secondary school English teacher in Cleveland, with all that entails (coaching, for example), and part-time graduate student. Intellectually, Gene and I were not a close match.

Editor’s note: Like so many people in Addison County, columnist Karl Lindholm was so very saddened to hear of the death this past weekend of Peter Quinn, a longtime school clinician at Vergennes Union High School, high school coach and talented basketball player. We choose to honor Peter by rerunning this column that Karl wrote in 2013.

“I was training for the Winter Olympics in Alaska when I got my orders for Vietnam.”

That’s how John Morton began his presentation to my class on the Vietnam War.

“Even when the plane landed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, I was sure the Army had made a mistake and I would be getting right back on the plane.”

In general, college boys found ways to avoid serving in Vietnam. That’s not so true of Middlebury College boys.

(Conversely the reasons not to live here — “March and November!”)

How about this! The Red Sox and the Dodgers in the World Series.

Pretty cool.

Two of the game’s oldest and most storied clubs squaring off: Brooklyn joined the National League in 1890 and Boston played in the inaugural American League season of 1901.

They weren’t known as the “Dodgers” and “Red Sox” in their early days, but simply the “Brooklyn Nationals” and the “Boston Americans.” The Red Sox became the Red Sox in 1907, and the Dodgers not officially until after the 1918 season.

Karl Lindholm: What's in a name — a championship?

Mookie Betts.

What kind of name is that, for a grown-up? Or a big league ball player?

Sounds like a character in a kids’ book, or a cartoon figure. Who’s next — Pippi Longstocking, Wile E. Coyote?

“Mookie Betts” indeed. Best Red Sox name since Coco Crisp.

When he comes up to the plate as the lead-off hitter for the Red Sox, you’re justified in asking, “Who’s that high school kid?”

Imagine this baseball game:

The first batter of the game walks on four pitches. The pitcher who issued the walk is outraged by the umpire’s calls. They exchange words and the pitcher charges the plate and punches the umpire in the face, whereupon he is summarily ejected from the game.
