Pollution in Lake Champlain, Part 3: Treading water: slow clean up continues

By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Warm weather earlier this month sparked blue-green algae blooms in Lake Champlain’s waters, prompting the Vermont Department of Health to caution boaters, swimmers, pet-owners and other residents to avoid contact with the contaminated water.

The water may not be clear, but this much is: Pollution in the form of phosphorus entering the lake poses a serious threat to Lake Champlain’s waters.

Editor’s note: This article is the second in a three-part series about the Lake Champlain clean-up efforts. After examining the state of the county’s waterways on July 15, we’re turning our attention to the divisive debate about the role agriculture plays in water quality degradation. (All articles are available after print publication online at www.addisonindependent.com.) In next week’s final installment, we look ahead to what’s on the horizon for clean up efforts in the Lake Champlain basin.

Editor’s note: With frustration brewing about the amount being spent on Lake Champlain clean-up efforts — and the apparent lack of results in better water quality — the Addison Independent set out to understand the complicated discussion about water quality in Vermont, with a focus on the agricultural industry often pinpointed as a main culprit in lake pollution.

Mutlimedia profile of Dan Freeman

Posted on July 12, 2010 |
By Kevin Lehman, Kathryn Flagg, and George Altshuler

img_8722.jpg

Dan Freeman began hand-making custom leather shoes in the 1970s, and opened his Middlebury shop about ten years later. To learn the trade, he tracked down an old leather-worker in New Orleans, and spent days on Grey Hound buses traveling to Louisiana. After some persistence from Freeman, the New Orleans man agreed to teach Freeman his trade. Freeman estimates that there are around ten people left in the country that make the his type of custom boots and shoes.

Freeman steps into shoemaking niche

MIDDLEBURY — “Just speak up if we can help you,” Dan Freeman called to the customers who’d ambled into the Middlebury shoemaker’s shop.

Just as quickly as he’d looked up, he was back to work. Behind his worktable, Freeman’s hands were in constant motion — stretching the leather in one shoe, and boxing up another pair to ship off to a customer. He pulled lasts, the foot-shaped models used for designing shoes, from the crowded shelves around his workbench.

Clippings: Newspaper girl bids readers adieu

A few months ago I was covering an event at the Bristol Elementary School with photographer Trent Campbell — the sort of story I sometimes offer up self-deprecatingly to friends when I talk about my job. This, I’ll joke, is the bread and butter of community journalists: elementary school assemblies and small town police logs. In Bristol, a handful of students spent all year growing out their hair for Locks of Love, and Trent and I were on hand at the end-of-year assembly to document the big cut: snip!

STARKSBORO — A resident in Starksboro is realizing that, when it comes to Vermont utility companies, not all solar projects are created equal.

Though one Vermont utility is offering generous incentives to promote solar project, the same isn’t true at other utility companies in the state — something homeowners and some legislators would like to see change as a way to promote the creation of more solar projects.
