Lincoln selectboard to weigh town plan

Posted on April 29, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln selectboard is expected to approve a new version of the town plan next month, paving the way for the town’s planning commission to forge ahead with long-awaited changes to Lincoln zoning regulations.

The selectboard has scheduled a final public hearing on the plan for May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln town clerk’s office. The hearing comes after the board mistakenly voted to adopt the plan earlier this spring, but realized soon after that they hadn’t scheduled the formal final hearing necessary to adopt the plan.

Starksboro considers solar array

STARKSBORO — School and town officials in Starksboro are hurriedly considering a plan to install a 150-kilowatt solar array in the town before the expiration of generous state and federal tax credits that would defray the cost of the project.

The selectboard and the Robinson Elementary School board are jointly considering the possible solar array, which officials hope could supply town and school buildings with renewable energy while “locking in” electricity costs for both groups.

Updates eyed for quality seal program

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture is overhauling its Vermont Seal of Quality program after a kerfuffle this winter put the allegedly ill-managed program on the chopping block.

But now agency officials, along with Vermont producers, are heading back to the drawing board to revive — and revise — the seal of quality after legislators kept the program alive with a $50,000 appropriation in the jobs bill signed into law by Gov. James Douglas earlier this month.

Locals stranded in Europe by volcano

ADDISON COUNTY — Air traffic over Europe slowly picked up late last week after a giant plume of volcanic ash brought airports across the continent to a standstill, stranding hundreds of thousands of travelers and wreaking economic havoc to the tune of more than $1 billion.

The massive flight disruptions overseas — the largest since Sept. 11, 2001 — reached all the way to Addison County. Local travelers found their spring break trips disrupted when the unexpected disaster grounded them in airports from Germany to Ireland.

Mt. Abe support staff, board clash over contract

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s non-union support staff and members of the high school board clashed on Tuesday night over a tender subject: salary and benefit negotiations.

The conversation came after the Mount Abe board, in a rare move, decided to suspend the rules at its board meeting on Tuesday evening to openly discuss a topic normally left behind closed doors.

So far, the school board is pushing for no increase in salaries for the non-union staff, and has also indicated an interest in raising health insurance co-pays from 4 to 10 percent.

Cyclist fights MS with cross-country trek

STARKSBORO — Starksboro resident Katy Blue jokes that her plan to cycle across the country this summer is a “turning 40” thing.

But for Blue, who is, yes, 40, the ambitious adventure to ride alone from Vermont to Seattle is more than a mid-life whim: The cross-country trek makes good on Blue’s long-time dream to see the country, and serves as a tribute to Blue’s father, Bob Blue, who died in 2006 after a 20-year battle with multiple sclerosis, or MS.

After her father’s death, Blue found herself devastated — and angry.

Mount Abe eyes food plan

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board on Tuesday decided to solicit bids from outside food service vendors as the board continues to weigh its choices for overhauling the school’s cafeteria system.

Board chair Lanny Smith said that sending the project out to bid doesn’t mean the board will necessarily choose an outside company to run the school’s food service program, but simply leaves that option open for next year.

BRISTOL — A group of movement and art teachers in Bristol are collaborating on a new, multi-purpose studio center on Main Street. Their goal: to provide space for everything from watercolor painting to yoga and dance classes under one roof.

The fruit of their labor — Open Sky Studio — opened earlier this month on Main Street in a brightly lit, 1,000-square-foot space above Cubber’s Restaurant.
