FERRISBURGH — Gerianne Smart first got to know Walter Hacks in the milking parlor of a Waterbury Center dairy.

Moving among the cows, dairy farmer George Woodard told his friend about Hacks in fits and spurts: The fictional character was 11 years old, a tenacious Vermont farm boy infatuated with Westerns and a speed demon on a bicycle.

It turned out that Hacks and his story had been rattling around in Woodard’s head for some time — and it wasn’t long before Smart, a Ferrisburgh resident, was equally infatuated.

ADDISON COUNTY — Changes are afoot for Vermont’s so-called “Current Use” program in an effort to trim $1.6 million from the popular tax abatement program.

A committee bill that would charge every landowner in the program a $128 fee passed the Senate finance committee last week, and was on notice for a second reading early this week. As the Addison Independent went to press on Wednesday, the schedule tentatively called for the bill to be discussed on the Senate floor on Wednesday or Thursday.

Farmers team up for collaborative CSA

ADDISON COUNTY — On a brisk mid-April morning, Jeremy Gildrien worked alone in the large greenhouse beside his Middlebury home, fashioning from a mound of earth the “soil blocks” that would someday soon nurture small, green seedlings.

The breeze cut through the greenhouse as Gildrien worked among the rows of spinach and radishes and pea shoots, each sending up sprouts. He and his wife, Caitlin, are beginning farmers, and they’re learning that much of the work on their vegetable farm is solitary.

BRISTOL — Local foods advocates, educators and farmers convened on Tuesday afternoon with a full plate of work in front of them: Participants in the county-wide summit first and foremost want to see school districts in Addison County serving more food that is locally grown and produced — but that goal was the tip of the iceberg.

Dairies hunker down for more low prices

Posted on April 8, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont dairy farmers slogged through the worst milk prices they’d seen in decades for much of 2009, struggling to stay in business as they sold their milk at prices so low they could not cover the cost of production.

Now, milk price forecasts suggest that 2010 isn’t shaping up to be much better for dairymen, many of whom went into debt to the tune of $800 to $1,000 per cow last year in order to continue farming.

Company helps elders live at home

Posted on April 8, 2010 |

LINCOLN — Bern Terry wants his clients to think of him like the family nephew: friendly, available and ready to step in when an elder needs a little extra help around the home.

That concept of flexible, personal home care is at the heart of a new for-profit senior care business expanding this month to Addison County. As the company’s name implies, Extended Family steps in to help senior citizens remain independent and in their homes — much like a family member or neighbor might pitch in as someone ages.

By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Proponents and opponents of a gravel pit near the Bristol village met again this week in the latest chapter of a years-long fight over a proposed 26-acre excavation project off of Rounds Road.

After two separate applications for town zoning permits and several appeals to the state environmental court, the wheels are beginning to turn in a hearing to determine whether or not the proposed gravel pit conforms with Act 250, the state’s Land Use and Development Act.

Posted on April 5, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — School board officials in Lincoln last week warned a proposed 2010-2011 school year spending plan after a vote on the budget was put on hold at the town’s annual meeting in early March.

The new spending plan calls for $1,609,535 in expenditures. According to Addison Northeast Supervisory Union business manager, the educational spending in the budget is virtually unchanged from the $1.4 million figure presented to the town in early March.
