Leicester native featured on Food Network cooking show

LEICESTER — When Adam Young worked in the dishroom at the Brandon Inn, he may not have imagined he would become an acclaimed pastry chef. But if you ask Brandon Inn co-owner and chef Louis Pattis, Young was something special from the start.

“That kid is the hardest worker you could ever find,” Pattis said. “Work for him was just something he had to do, no complaints.”

Steinway grand piano donated to Brandon arts hub

BRANDON —The Compass Music and Art Center took delivery on a prized piano early this month, thanks to local ties to a unique individual.

A 1915 Steinway Model B grand piano arrived, along with a collection of sound equipment, from the estate of the late John Fischer, an avant-garde Jazz pianist, artist, writer and all-around creative force who passed away in New York City last August, six days after his 86th birthday.

Unusual avian visitor lures birders to Brandon

BRANDON — Brandon is home to a lot of unique individuals, but a truly rare bird paid a visit last week.

A beautiful white trumpeter swan attracted the interest and excitement of the birding community when a fine specimen was seen off Route 73 in the Otter Creek floodwaters hanging out with a flock of Canada geese.

Carl Phelps owner of Miller Hill Farm, Nursery and Gardens in Sudbury spotted the swan on Wednesday, March 8, south of the railroad overpass.

Brandon man accused of hitting child, faces felony charges

BRANDON — A Brandon man identified as a habitual offender with three previous felonies has been charged with three counts of felony aggravated domestic assault.

Brandon police responded to a report of a family fight in Bridge Park on Friday, March 10, and arrested Jeremy J. Young, 42.

The victim told police that Young pushed her down while she was holding their child, choked her, pulled a clump of her hair out, and pulled out one of her teeth with his bare hands.

The victim also claimed that Young threw a punch at her, missed, and hit the child.

Lifelong educators honored for service to Brandon

BRANDON — The gathering at the Brandon Town Hall Monday evening may go down as the feel-good town meeting of this young century.

Not only were local residents excited to hold this year’s town meeting in the Brandon Town Hall for the first time since 1979, but they enjoyed the highlight of the evening: the homage paid to lifelong residents Jane and Bud Coolidge and their expressions of thanks.

New Brandon budget would lower taxes

BRANDON — While the proposed Brandon town budget includes a modest overall spending increase, voter approval would mean a lower tax rate.

That’s because there is $50,000 less allocated for paving under a special appropriation on the warning than there was in the current town budget.

Brandon police targeting drivers using cell phones

BRANDON —Brandon police set out to enforce the construction zone speed limit around the downtown Brandon culvert project last month, but they ended up ticketed even more drivers for using their cell phones than for speeding.

Brandon Police Chief Chris Brickell said that over four separate enforcement days in January, Brandon police issued 43 citations to drivers who were observed violating Vermont’s Hands Free Cell Phone Law.

Brandon residents to decide on $3 million budget

BRANDON — The selectboard here has approved the Town Meeting warning and a proposed budget to send to voters.

The proposed $2,999,986 municipal spending plan for fiscal year 2018 includes a 1.8 percent increase in total expenditures, or $53,276, over the current spending plan.

The amount to be raised by taxes, $2,509,066, is up 0.89 percent, or $22,244.

The cost drivers for the fiscal year 2018 budget are centered around stark increases in worker’s compensation insurance and health insurance for town employees.

RNeSU sticking to budget plans

BRANDON — The Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union has no intention of retooling its school budgets or waiting until a May date to have voters weigh in, despite what Gov. Phil Scott outlined in his budget address late last month.

The Brandon Reporter met with RNeSU Superintendent Jeanne Collins and Business Manager Brenda Fleming last week to discuss Scott’s directive, which came in a sweeping budget address just five days earlier.

Public to meet Whiting-Sudbury principal hopefuls

WHITING/SUDBURY — There are three candidates vying for the principalship at the Sudbury and Whiting elementary schools, and parents will get a chance to meet them over two public forums in the next week.

Current Sudbury and Whiting Principal Ed Barnwell will retire in June, and Rutland Northeast Superintendent Jeanne Collins said she has three qualified candidates to choose from for Barnwell’s replacement.
