Trained dogs help students learn to read

BRANDON — In a quiet corner of the student support room at the Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, a boy reads and a dog listens.

It’s Friday, and third-grader William Burt, 9, is carefully reading aloud to Ivan, a two-year-old German shorthaired pointer, and Ivan’s owner, Kristie Adams.

Ivan is a therapy dog, and once a month Adams brings him to Neshobe through a program offered by Caring Canines Therapy, a nonprofit group based in Massachusetts. He is one of three dogs that visit the student support room at Neshobe to do just that: support.

Sudbury man lives through river plunge

SUDBURY — A local man is lucky to be alive after he drove his truck off Route 73 and into the Otter Creek one morning last week.

Just before 6 a.m. on March 23, Brandon police responded to a report of an accident on Route 73 West involving a pickup truck that had driven off the roadway and into the Otter Creek. Police responded and learned that a 62-year-old man from Sudbury was traveling eastbound on the road toward Brandon on his way to a medical appointment.

500kW solar array in Brandon gets state approval

BRANDON — The town of Brandon has received a Certificate of Public Good for a 500-kilowatt, net metering solar array located in the town industrial park.

The Public Service Board, which authorizes and regulates all power-generating projects in Vermont, issued the required CPG for the Brandon array on March 17.

Wanted man caught in Middlebury

BRANDON — A Rutland man wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Leicester has been caught, but not before stealing at least one car in Brandon, police say, and possibly another.

Middlebury police arrested Shawn Michael Ritchie, 42, on an active warrant this past Friday at 4 p.m. on North Pleasant Street.

Man with guns charged with threatening scrap metal yard owner

LEICESTER — A Middlebury man police say brandished a gun and threatened to shoot the owner of a Leicester scrap yard last week is out on bail.

Kadia J. Barenbaum, 56, on Thursday, Jan. 21, pleaded innocent to a felony count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and to a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment.

New Otter Valley district gets new board

BRANDON — Voters in all eight Rutland Northeast towns on Tuesday not only approved the proposed school governance unification plans, they also voted for candidates to create one, 13-member Otter Valley Unified Union School Board and a four-member Barstow District Board to oversee the new school districts.

While the number of board representatives a town receives is based on population, there are also four “at-large” board seats weighted equally to the town seats.

Residents in every town voted on each of the board seats.

Brandon-area voters give strong support to unification

BRANDON — Voters in eight Brandon-area towns on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a proposal to merge six school districts into two under the state’s Act 46 school consolidation law. It was the second consolidation in Vermont since the law was approved last spring.

The Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, along with the Barstow School District, proposed a new side-by-side school district, which the state Board of Education approved earlier this month.

Brandon area to vote on school unification

BRANDON — This week, regular Vermont citizens will get a chance to vote on Act 46. The law, enacted last spring, offers financial incentives for towns to merge in multi-school districts governed by a single board and funded by a single budget.

Voters in the eight Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union towns will go to the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots on the proposed Act 46 unification plan for their district.

Otter Valley's unified district earns state approval

BRANDON — The proposed Otter Valley Unified Union School District won approval from the Vermont State Board of Education last week and the stage is set for the Jan. 19 multi-town vote.

The Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union took its side-by-side school consolidation proposal to the state board for approval at a Dec. 15 meeting at Mill River Union High School.
