Letter to the editor: Trump overlooks China's action

The New York Times recently reported that China is building a new Island at the tip of Malysia in the major shipping lane between Asia and Europe with an unwilling Malaysia that owes China too much to say no.  This city will have a major shipping port.  This is the new Forest City.

It didn’t mention that the US is doing anything.  Trump has probably not heard of Malaysia and shipping in that area.

Letter to the editor: Trump fans lose with his policies

It is strange to see that those who will greatly suffer from Trump policies are leading the charge to support him. Trump is trying to kill health insurance programs. Talking about killing Social Security. Killing the climate saving agreement. Making it hard for poor people to vote. Starting a trade war where our workers will loose jobs and things will get more expensive. Lowering the morality of the nation by his example. The harmful list is too long. Praising our enemies and stepping on toes of our foreign friends. Is there an explanation for this self immolation?

Letter to the editor: Trump is setting our country back

My French and German friends say that Trump is becoming a has-been and bringing the U.S. down from it past world leadership with him. Since Trump is tearing down good world agreements, he can no longer be trusted, and his ideas don’t make sense.

How long will it take for a good president to re-build the good will and prestige the U.S. used to have in pre-Trump days? How soon can we get rid of this dangerous fool?

Letter to the editor: Trump ignoring threat from China

Trump has met his match and doesn’t know it, Xi Jinping, the smiling leader of China. This man is absolute ruler of China and he is extending his authority over many parts of the world by smiling and promising to work together for a better world. He is also building roads and helping build these countries. Like Tibet, once in control of a country it becomes part of China and the people there are no longer independent, but under the iron rule of Xi and China. Instead of being wary of China, Trump is all on edge over North Korea. While Trump sleeps, China increases its power.

Letter to the editor: European energy advances may leave the U.S. behind

Germany and other European countries are paying customers to take excess energy. With solar panels and wind turbines, sometimes there is more energy on the grid than is being used. “Power prices go negative in Germany, a positive for consumers,” New York Times, Dec. 26, 2017.

Letter to the Editor: Voiding of insurance requirement latest attack on ACA?

Republicans want to stop the requirement that all have health insurance. Insuring as many in a market is a concept that has been used for centuries. A bigger coverage area spreads the cost around to make it cheaper for everyone including those who actually suffer a “peril” or have to get an insurance payout. Insurers who covered floods and disasters are facing a disaster as not enough customers have paid in to cover all the disasters.

Letter to the Editor: Trump anniversary 'scream' planned

“Americans from coast to coast plan to commemorate the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s 2016 election win by screaming into the void.”

Let us meet at the gazebo on the Middlebury green at 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 for a big scream of horror at the past year.  Wear something red (which color prompted Munch to paint his famous painting “The Scream”) and bring copies of that picture.

It seems that Trump’s economic plan “to make America Great Again,” (now called MAGAnomics) is a redo of Reganomics and Bushanomics. Both are the tried and failed concept of reduce taxes on the rich and reduce regulations and somehow the rich will start doing an Ayn Rand thing of exploding with creative and enterprising energy.

But it didn’t happen then and won’t happen now.

Letter to the Editor: Birds, engineers asking questions

A hummingbird, with bright ruby throat, just tapped on the kitchen window. It seemed to say “Hi, we are back so get out the feeders. And remember it is one part sugar and four parts hot water to mix then cool it before putting it in feeders.” Some might say that there are a lot of flowers on trees and plants so feeding hummingbirds is not needed. But, what are we to do when they tell us that they would like to be fed?
