Otter Valley Union High plans for fewer students

BRANDON — After holding 27 meetings since January of 2018, and sifting through 90 pages of district data, the Otter Valley Unified Union (OVUU) Planning Task Force has come up with a road map for future planning in the school district that includes Brandon, Leicester, Whiting, Goshen, Sudbury and Pittsford.

Effort looks to reclassify Otter Creek wetlands

BRANDON — An effort to reclassify the Otter Creek wetlands from a Class II wetlands to Class I is in the preliminary stages as the conservation commissions from Cornwall and Salisbury have formed a steering committee to petition the change. It is still very early on in the process and they still have much work to do, organizers say, including outreach to landowners.

Otter Valley Union High School graduates 86 seniors

BRANDON — After 12 years of hard work and studious learning, 86 students from Otter Valley Union High School received their diplomas on Saturday, June 8.

Many of the students have already planned for their future after graduation. Several have been accepted to apprenticeships or the military and many more are moving on to a two- or four-year school.

Mt. Abe prevails in D-II softball showdown with OV

CASTLETON — Something had to give in Friday’s Division II softball final at Castleton University.

Top-seeded two-time defending champion Mount Abraham Union High School entered on a roll, having thumped No. 9 Randolph and No. 5 Fair Haven in a quarterfinal and semifinal after a first-round bye.

Meanwhile No. 2 Otter Valley brought a kind of magic with them throughout the Division II playoffs — comeback magic. The Otters were down in the late going in every game they played this postseason before rallying to win.

Brandon's Memorial Day flower girl tradition goes back more than a century

BRANDON — For more than 100 years young girls have laid flowers on Memorial Day around the war memorial on Brandon’s Green. The Memorial Day service is a tradition that celebrates the sacrifices of soldiers long passed, starting not long after the Civil War and now encompassing all wars.

The history of the flower girls in Brandon, however, springs from the death of one particular soldier in the Civil War, of the grieving widow left behind, and of her effort to honor his life and to uphold ideals that are still unfulfilled.

BRANDON — Sometimes, frustration can lead to inspiration.

Anyone who has driven through Brandon during the Route 7 construction knows how frustrating the time spent waiting for your turn to go can be. But it was a moment like that, sitting in traffic in her car near the Brandon Town Hall, that inspired Gina Germond to take a new path in her life.

The stylish woman spent more than 20 years in all aspects of retail from working in small businesses to corporate chains, from trade shows to wholesale, you name it, she had done it.

Police: Man used truck to kill woman

WHITING — Although his dream got off to a slow start, Bruce Fowler says his project, which has lofty goals, is finally getting some traction.

“It’s taken some time, had some rough patches, but we’re getting going now,” the stout ex-military man said. “I’ve been helping people and feeding people for years, but I wanted to create a place that served veterans.”
