State launches new efforts to mint new Vermonters

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing has several new initiatives to both attract more visitors to the state and encourage tourists to move to Vermont permanently.

The department’s commissioner, Wendy Knight, said that such programs aim to address Vermont’s workforce development concerns by converting visitors into residents.

Middlebury is targeted for energy programs

MIDDLEBURY — As part of its 2019 effort to reduce energy use in the Green Mountain State, Efficiency Vermont is targeting Middlebury and four other Vermont communities to help home and business owners cut back on power consumption.

Efficiency Vermont began its campaign in Middlebury in the fall of 2017 as part of a partnership with the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative, according to Efficiency Vermont Account Manager Meghan Chambers.

New buildings not always needed to solve housing shortage

ADDISON COUNTY — As developers face rising construction costs, town zoning regulations and a lack of infrastructure, the possibility of adding new affordable housing in Addison County gets more complicated. However, there are other, smaller ways to help increase local housing stock without developing new projects.

One potential solution is to encourage homeowners to build accessory dwelling units, often called in-law apartments, and rent them out.

Offering hope: Locals in recovery

MIDDLEBURY — Garrett Charleton knows what makes a good employee. He successfully ran his company, Happy Valley Painters, in Rutland County for 21 years before moving it to Middlebury this past November.

Among his past employees have been people recovering from substance use disorder. These people sometimes have difficulty finding a good job — even in an economy like Vermont’s that has a shrinking workforce.

Workshop on race and privilege offered

MIDDLEBURY — Debby Irving, author of “Waking Up White,” believes it is important to have hard conversations about race and racism, even in one of the whitest states in the country.

That is why she is returning to the Congregational Church of Middlebury this Sunday, Jan. 27, from 3 to 5 p.m., to facilitate a workshop called “Interrupting Patterns of Privilege.” The workshop was organized by the local chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice, or SURJ, a group that works to educate people about racism.

Local lawmakers set goals for session

MONTPELIER — As the new legislative session began last week, Vermont lawmakers said that they expect to pass bills on paid family leave and the $15-an-hour minimum wage, both of which mirror bills that Gov. Phil Scott vetoed last May.

Addison County members of the state Senate and House of Representatives said other priorities for this session include water clean up, education funding and providing legal protection for groups who face discrimination.
