Lincoln voters narrowly reject $2M school project

LINCOLN — Lincoln voters on Tuesday narrowly defeated a proposed $2 million bond to fund repairs and upgrades at Lincoln Community School.

Despite the snow and slush that covered county roads on Tuesday, residents came out in large numbers with by some estimates about half of possible voters casting ballots.

The final tally was 222 votes in favor of the bond, and 237 votes against.

Lincoln bond vote preview set

LINCOLN — At 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lincoln Community School (LCS) multipurpose room, members of the LCS Building Committee will present its $2 million bond proposal to town residents before the bond goes to a vote on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Should the bond be approved, Lincoln residents will see an increase in their taxes for the next 20 years.

Modern veterinarian makes house calls

MIDDLEBURY — Randy Ross’ medical practice relies on good old-fashioned house calls to the homes of his 1,800 patients around Addison County.

But Ross’ visits are anything but routine — he often must first track down his patient, and wrestle them onto a table and make sure they don’t run away or scratch him or his assistant.

ANeSU ends negotiations, imposes teacher contract

BRISTOL — Will Parini has the contract negotiation blues.

Parini, a new music teacher at Bristol and Starksboro elementary schools, stood up in front of a nearly full auditorium of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union teachers, board members and residents at Mount Abraham Union High School last Wednesday night and sang about the woes of the impasse reached on Dec. 16.

Parini was the last to speak in the discussion leading up to the negotiation committee’s vote to impose the ANeSU school boards’ final proposal as the terms for the 2010-2011 teachers’ contract.

Mount Abe board eyes deeper cuts

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board is slashing an additional $174,000 from its 2011-2012 educational spending plan after receiving word this week that the Bristol school will post a projected $111,000 deficit this year.

A recently completed audit revealed a significant drop in Mount Abe’s projected revenues for next year that forced Co-principals Andy Kepes and Leon Wheeler to go back and make more spending cuts on top of the $266,767 that was eliminated earlier in the budget planning process.

Bristol library celebrates its centennial

BRISTOL — The new year marks Bristol’s Lawrence Memorial Library’s 100th birthday, and to celebrate, the library is throwing itself parties all year long.

In 1911, local businessman and Addison County Sheriff William Lawrence gave the building at 40 North St. to the town for just one dollar. Lawrence dedicated the library to his two deceased wives, Minnie Peet Lawrence and Lockie Partch Lawrence.

College harvests willow for biomass fuel

MIDDLEBURY — Those working in Middlebury College’s sustainability office are feeling a bit more “chipper” this week.

On Tuesday, Middlebury College employees began harvesting the first batch of wood chips from its willow test plot in two fields to the west of the campus off Route 125, bringing the school’s biomass plant one step closer to processing its own wood fuel.

Starksboro store promotes commerce

STARKSBORO — Kerry Kurt runs her general store a little bit differently than the average business owner.

On any given afternoon, one might approach the Horse n Rebel Grille and Gallery on Route 116 in Starksboro and find a note on the door reading, “Out on the farm, call if you need me,” accompanied by a phone number.

And it’s not unusual for Kurt to return from her chores to find that people have left notes for her on the counter inside with a dollar for the Arizona Iced Tea, or an old saddle.

Bristol's timekeeper

BRISTOL — Bristol resident Victoria Grace has the best view in town.

For more than 20 years now, Grace has climbed up the series of staircases and rickety wooden ladders to the tip-top of Holley Hall twice a week to wind the clock that was installed by the E. Howard Company of Boston in 1884.

Grace inherited the job from her brother-in-law, Roland Benedict, years ago after her sister turned it down. Benedict’s father before him had wound the clock.

ANeSU officials to consider next steps on teacher pact

BRISTOL — On Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m., the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU) Board’s Negotiation Committee will meet to discuss the board’s next steps in the teacher contract negotiations process.

At a Dec. 16 meeting, negotiators representing both the boards and teachers from the Addison Northeast Education Association reached an impasse, leaving school board members to decide whether they should impose a contract on the teachers.
