LINCOLN — After the Vermont education commissioner in September rejected the Lincoln Community School board’s $3.7 million bond proposal to pay for infrastructure improvements, the Building Committee returned to the drawing board. On Monday evening the board approved a scaled-back, $2 million version of the original proposal.

The bond will go to a vote on Jan. 18, and a public information meeting on Jan. 11, for discussion between the board and Lincoln residents, whose taxes will increase for the next 20 years if the bond is approved.

NEW HAVEN — A horse named J.Lo — and the two New Haven sisters who ride her — have been causing quite a stir on both the local and national horse show scene as of late.

The horse and her riders, Hailey and Brooke, daughters of Kelley and Scott Perlee of New Haven, took home the gold in six different classes at the 2010 Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, held in Oklahoma City in October. Horses in these competitions are judged primarily on appearance and gait.

Bristol youth put new spin on pageant

BRISTOL — Though the Bristol Christmas pageant will include the traditional Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, complete with manger and barnyard animals, this year’s pageant takes on a rather untraditional format.

Seventeen-year-old Thomas Ahern, who has been taking a film class at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, volunteered to film and edit a video version of the Christmas story that will premiere at the First Baptist Church of Bristol on Sunday, Dec. 12, on 4:30 p.m.

Architect recalls Vt. vernacular

MIDDLEBURY — Architect Turner Brooks grew up visiting the Ferrisburgh home of family friend Clement Hurd, illustrator of the beloved children’s book “Goodnight Moon.” Brooks still references the whimsical illustrations today when describing his own design work.

“There’s an incredible, strong juxtaposition of the intimate and the infinite,” he said during his recent lecture at Middlebury College, pointing during a slide showing to one of Hurd’s drawings of the bunny’s cozy bedroom with the lone window displaying the infinite night sky.

ADDISON COUNTY — High-speed winds ripped through the county last Wednesday, knocking down trees and limbs and leaving thousands of residents without power.

FERRISBURGH — There is an old Balti Arab proverb that goes, “The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family.”

This proverb inspired the title of humanitarian Greg Mortenson’s popular book, “Three Cups of Tea,” which in turn inspired Ferrisburgh resident Mary Kerr, who has made it her mission to build connections between the United States and the Middle East.

ADDISON COUNTY — According to local vendors, Megan Price’s new book “Vermont Wild” has been selling like hotcakes.

The book is a conglomeration of 13 standalone stories told from the perspective of Vermont game warden of 32 years, Eric Nuse of Johnson. Nuse teamed up with Price, a Fair Haven resident, over a year ago to put his stories in a form that would be digestible for readers both young and old.

MIDDLEBURY — Green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and Aunt Betty’s traditional, unidentifiable Jell-O salad aside, some students at Middlebury College do not even know what Thanksgiving — a uniquely American holiday — actually is.

In his freshman year, Aubrey Dube, a junior from Botswana, went home with his roommate to Westchester, N.Y., and experienced his first Thanksgiving.

“It was weird because people eat until they drop,” Dube said. “I thought, ‘Wait, what? Are we seriously doing this?’ They were eating and taking breaks and going back to eat.”
