BRANDON — The opening of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is one of the most famous scenes in all of literature.

Two Danish watchmen, Bernardo and Marcellus, bring Horatio, a friend of Prince Hamlet, to their post to show him what they have seen the past two nights: the ghost of the deceased King Hamlet.

As the trio sit in darkness, the ghost suddenly appears. They stare at the spirit in disbelief until the dawn approaches and the king vanishes. Horatio then runs to tell young Hamlet what he has seen, and thus the play begins.

MIDDLEBURY — Have you ever wondered why the wires in your cell phone are so big and inefficient? No?

Well, it’s something that Middlebury College chemistry student Peter Dykeman-Bermingham has thought about. A lot.

That’s why he’s spent the entire summer tinkering with chemical equations to create synthetic wires that could solve that very problem, and why, this past Thursday, July 27, Dykeman-Bermingham’s work was one of 40 research projects that were on display at Middlebury’s annual Summer Research Symposium.

County firemen earn statewide recognition

ADDISON COUNTY — When a fire destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel in Middlebury on July 12, volunteers from seven area fire departments responded with many firefighters going beyond the call of duty. The Addison County fire service was working like a well-oiled machine to ensure that citizens were safe and property damage was kept to a minimum.

It was this type of selfless hard work that earned four county firefighters from three departments recognition from a statewide organization earlier this month.

VERGENNES — Dozens of children were grinning ear-to-ear recently as they perused stacks of glistening new books the Children’s Literacy Foundation, or CLiF, was giving away for free in Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol.

That’s right, free.

As part of CLiF’s commitment to encourage summer reading, on Monday, July 24, the nonprofit held storytelling and book giveaways at community hubs in the county’s three largest population centers.

MIDDLEBURY — What do a boat, “LIFE” magazine, and the landscapes of Vermont have in common? They’re all part of a trio of summer exhibitions on display at the Middlebury College Museum of Art until Aug. 13.

In what Museum Director Richard Saunders described as “total serendipity,” all three exhibitions are also tied to alumni of the college.

Whiting residents up in arms after neighbor opens gun range

WHITING — Some residents of the Stickney Road neighborhood in Whiting are fed up with the sound of gunfire coming from one resident’s shooting range, which they and a town official say is being operated illegally as a business.

“There have been occasions where target shooting starts at 6:45 a.m. and other times he shoots until 8:30 p.m. The constant gunfire all day is stressful for many animals in the neighborhood. Our golden retriever Bella shakes uncontrollably and hides in the closet,” said Owen Kant, who lives at 212 Stickney Road.

There’s this scene in “Page One: Inside The New York Times,” a 2011 documentary film about the paper of record, that I can’t stop thinking about.

It features David Carr, The Times’s media columnist who became the paper’s de facto spokesman before his death in 2015. In the scene, Carr debates the future of news with Michael Wolff, the founder of the news aggregation blog Newser.

MIDDLEBURY — “The Collinwood Fire,” the latest animated film by Middlebury’s Daniel Houghton, begins with a filmmaker and a journalist racing toward a column of smoke rising above a small town.

When the duo arrive at the scene, they record what they see on film and paper: children fleeing their elementary school as it is devoured by flames, forced to run past the corpses of their classmates and jump off a fire escape that does not reach the ground.

If you want to witness these events yourself, you can view the film online right now.
