Young trio of farmers leave 'footprints' in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Those who have unhappily watched the trends of young people leaving the state and farms closing up shop have reason to celebrate the launch of Footprint Farm in Starksboro this year.

Three young farmers — St. George native Jake Mendell, 25, and California natives Taylor Hutchison, 25, and Nathan Hammer, 32 — started work in April on their diversified, 9-acre farm at Starksboro’s Common Ground Center.

And already the trio says they have found a warm welcome for their mix of vegetables, flowers and animals.

Bristol man drowns in New Haven River on Fourth of July

BRISTOL — Post-parade Fourth of July festivities took a tragic turn in Bristol on Thursday afternoon. A 26-year-old Bristol man was swept away while swimming in the New Haven River between the twin bridges on Route 116 north of Bristol village.

Officials recovered the body at 10:15 a.m. on July 5. The victim was identified as Steven Orvis, 26, of Bristol.

Vermont State Police Lt. William Jenkins said a call came in to police at around 3 p.m. regarding a man who had been swept away from the Bartlett Falls swimming area in Bristol.

'Co-housing' development eyed for Bristol

BRISTOL — The creation of a “co-housing community” is being discussed for three historic homes in downtown Bristol, the Tomasi and Peake houses on North Street, and the nearby 12 North St.

Jim Mendel and Peg Kamens, the founders of the Common Ground Center in Starksboro, recently purchased the three historic, white buildings with the hope of renovating many of the currently unlivable spaces on the properties to accommodate multiple families interested in forming such a community.

Bristol spices up summer meals with cooking classes

BRISTOL — The Bristol Recreation Department will offer a series of fun cooking and nutrition classes for members of the community this summer, some designed for children and others for adults.

“We are constantly trying to poll the community to find what they are looking for,” said recreation director Darla Senecal, noting that the recreation department distributes surveys at the March town meeting and regularly solicits suggestions on its website and Facebook page.

Project raises awareness about education disparity

MIDDLEBURY — While the number of college graduates is on the rise, low-income students are less likely to hold a degree than their wealthier peers.

Meghan Mason, a Middlebury resident and Middlebury College staff member, is launching a campaign to fund a project she hopes will raise awareness about the challenges some high school students face when it comes to getting a college education.

Burnham Hall contra dance to benefit Lincoln Historical Society

LINCOLN — Susan Kevra, the daughter of late Lincoln resident Mary Anne Kevra, had come to the Green Mountains for the summer to tie up lose ends and finalize the sale of her mother’s South Lincoln home.

A contra dance caller who lives in Nashville with her Grammy-nominated guitarist husband Russ Barenberg, Kevra welcomed the opportunity for the homecoming.

Young farmers, land trust hope to conserve 687 acres in Bristol

BRISTOL — Trent and Abby Roleau always knew they wanted to have their own farm, a dream that few people can achieve in their early 20s.

Then, early this year, an email from the Vermont Land Trust landed in their inboxes. VLT was notifying its email list that it was seeking applications for a conservation project that would protect 687 acres of woodland and farmland on Route 116 north of Bristol village, land currently owned by the Farr and Fuller families. The Roleaus decided to throw their hat in the ring and drew up a business plan.

Monkton Central School regroups after half of teaching staff departs
