BRISTOL — Though the Bristol Elementary School board had initially hoped to announce a candidate for interim principal by May 20, that deadline has been extended by several weeks, according to Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams.

Current BES Principal Catrina DiNapoli announced last month that she would take on the role of director of curriculum and professional development at the ANeSU district office during the 2013-2014 academic year, filling in for Nancy Cornell who is taking a one-year leave of absence.

Clippings: Vermont's size is a big strength

Posted on June 6, 2013 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

Everything in the West is bigger. That was the thought going through my head as our car sped east on Route 2 through North Dakota just after sunset late last August, watching the fluorescent lights of Williston, N.D., flicker away behind us.

They weren’t the only lights. As far as the eye could see, hundreds of fires blazed from holes blasted into the prairie. The scale of industry and vastness of the Great Plains were overwhelming. We drove east pushing 75 mph for almost two hours. For almost two hours, on either side of the road, the fields were burning.

STARKSBORO — After more than two decades at Robinson Elementary School, art teacher Vera Ryersbach is retiring this month. She leaves quite a legacy behind — when Ryersbach came on board as a volunteer in 1989, Robinson was the last school in the Addison Northeast district that did not have an art teacher.

GMO fight continues in Vermont

GMO small photo-2.JPG

VERMONT — As summer heats up and the growing season is in full swing, groups around Vermont are stepping up their activism on an agricultural issue that is stirring up controversy around the state and around the world: genetically modified crops.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have deliberately modified DNA — scientists insert genetic material from other species to create a modified organism with different hormones, proteins or chemicals meant to do anything from repel insects to withstanding certain climates.

College Commencement: Graduates urged to nurture connections

MIDDLEBURY — Unseasonably bad wind and rain on Sunday drove the Middlebury College commencement ceremony indoors for the first time in 21 years. The 557 graduates of the class of 2013 gathered in a packed Nelson Recreation Center to receive their diplomas, in a ceremony that was in turns funny, thought-provoking and emotionally moving.

Overflow spaces around campus live-streamed the ceremony for friends and relatives whom the Nelson space — which could seat only 1,800 of the anticipated 5,000 commencement visitors — could not accommodate.

LINCOLN — Two groups of Vermont students will hit the road this summer with documentary film equipment in hand, as participants in “Conversations from the Open Road,” a creative new summer program founded by Vermont educator Mary Simons, in partnership with the Vermont Folklife Center.

Each group will travel to a region of the United States to explore what Simons calls the “stories behind the issue” most pertinent to that region. The program is designed for students age 16 to 19.

Bristol water system needs repairs

Posted on May 27, 2013 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

BRISTOL — When the water systems in most towns are experiencing a leak, identifying the problem area can be a simple matter of watching for where the excess water bubbles up to the surface.

But in Bristol, which sits atop a plateau of gravel and has a water system that dates back to 1905, things are rarely that simple.
