Banned Books Week kicks off with reading of suspect texts

MIDDLEBURY — What do Mark Twain, Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut and John Steinbeck all have in common? All are world-renowned authors with some of the most widely recognized works translated into multiple languages, and their works are also some of the most widely censored, challenged or banned.

But this Tuesday, seven Vermont writers gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury to read from those authors’ best works — for precisely that reason.

County's United Way seeks to raise $720,000

Vermonters flock to join McKibben, 350.org at largest climate march ever

NEW YORK CITY — Hundreds of Vermonters on Sunday afternoon joined an estimated 350,000 people on the streets of Manhattan for the People’s Climate March, the largest climate demonstration in U.S. history.

“This is the biggest event any of us will ever be a part of,” said Greg Dennis of Cornwall. “You just got a sense that if we can get this many people out on the streets, we can make leaders pay attention.”

Work planned for Route 7 this week

MIDDLEBURY — People traveling between Brandon and Middlebury via Route 7 this week should prepare for some potential traffic delays due to a substantial road repaving project.

Paving work may force lane closures around the construction areas. Traffic control officials will assist in maintaining traffic flow. Motorists should anticipate traffic delays while proceeding through the project, and plan accordingly.

Police charge man with assault at fairgrounds

NEW HAVEN — A Ferrisburgh man will have to appear in court to answer a charge of aggravated assault after he allegedly knocked another man unconscious a the Addison County fairgrounds early Saturday morning.

Vermont State Police report that on Sunday, Sept. 21, at approximately 22 minutes past midnight troopers responded to the fairgrounds for a report of an assault. When they arrived the troopers discovered that 35-year-old Joshua Bird of Franklin had been taken by ambulance to Fletcher Allen Health Care with a severe head injury.

Does your garden finish the year with a beautiful glorious bang, or does it just fade away with a whimper?

Summer’s exuberance may be over but, in its own way, the autumn garden can be every bit as lovely. At this time of year the gardener’s palette includes yellows and bronze, lavender and purple, dusky pinks and whites. There are colorful shrubs and beautiful grasses, plus some easily grown perennials, which all harmonize together to complete the gardening season with a flourish.

The Grift gathers old bandmates for 15th reunion performance

MIDDLEBURY — They’ve been together longer than the Beatles, had almost as many members as Spinal Tap, and have traveled half a million miles on the road. Now, they’re preparing to commemorate their 15th anniversary with a big reunion.

They’re the band with the Addison County roots known as The Grift, and after dozens of tours, thousands of shows and six albums, the band is still going strong.

Local buses headed to NYC climate march

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County residents and Middlebury College students have filled four buses to go to the People’s Climate March taking place in New York City this Sunday, Sept. 21. They will be joined by others commuting by train, vans and car pools. More than 900 Vermonters and students from Vermont colleges are expected at the march.
