Grants for local apple, meat-cutting projects aims to fuel local foods movement

ADDISON COUNTY — Nearly $100,000 in grants to two local apple operations announced last week, plus additional grants supporting meat-cutting and composting efforts, aim to help businesses cultivating the local foods market.

Ultimately, the awards through the highly competitive Working Lands Enterprise Fund should make locally grown and processed foods more readily available to Vermont consumers.

ACTR expanding its Middlebury-to-Rutland bus service beginning July 8

ADDISON COUNTY — Many people like to visit Vermont for the beautiful scenery and the local attractions. Big attractions like Lake Champlain or the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory sometimes overshadow some of the smaller places to visit.

One example of these hidden gems is the state fish hatcheries, which are a good place to learn about fish — which species can be caught in Vermont waters and how they get there.

New Sheldon Museum exhibit offers a view into the history of dairy

MIDDLEBURY — Ask some young whippersnapper where milk comes from, and you might get the wiseacre response, “from a carton.”

Well, a new exhibit at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History aims to set the record straight on all things dairy, covering the past 200 years. On display at the Middlebury museum through Aug. 4, “From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England” features a mesmerizing mélange of milk memorabilia that would make Old McDonald’s jaw drop.

Danyow succeeds Rose as new head of the Humane Society

MIDDLEBURY — It was almost six years ago that Jackie Rose became top dog at the Addison County Humane Society (ACHS).

She will leave that position next week with a great sense of accomplishment, having boosted programs and spearheaded a more than $1 million campaign that tripled the size of the ACHS’s Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Center at 236 Boardman St.

“Without a doubt, this has been the most rewarding professional experience I have ever had,” Rose said on Wednesday as she showed the ropes to her successor, Jessica Danyow.
