SUDBURY — Family and friends of Scott Sgorbati are remembering the friendly, charismatic community member who died of Eastern equine encephalitis on Tuesday, as state health officials in the meantime remind people to take reasonable precautions to prevent spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

Sgorbati, a 49-year-old Sudbury resident and father of two sons, was hospitalized on Aug. 14 after contracting the mosquito-borne disease, and on Tuesday he succumbed.

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of columns by town officials that aims to help residents avail themselves of municipal services.

What is the difference between a Task Force, a Steering Committee, a Committee, a Commission and a Board?

Generally, each group differs in duration, scope, level of formality and, in some cases, the legal basis for membership.

SUDBURY — A fund has been established at a local bank to help the family of a local man stricken with Eastern equine encephalitis who was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The Scott Sgorbati Family Aid Fund was established Sept. 7 at the National Bank of Middlebury to help the family of Sgorbati, one of two local men to contract EEE last month as the first human cases in the state. The other man, 87-year-old Richard Breen of Brandon, died of the disease on Sept. 4.

ADDISON COUNTY — Every orchard agrees: The story of this year’s harvest started in the spring.

“It got too hot too soon,” said Bob Douglas, the co-owner of Douglas Orchards in Shoreham, of the unusual warm spell that hit around St. Patrick’s Day. “Everything blossomed early. But the frost still came along when it always does, and killed those blossoms.”

And while Douglas’s crop is going to come in below average, other Addison County orchards are expecting a decent year.

Posted on September 10, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — Homeowners in a half-dozen Addison County towns who would like to take advantage of voter-approved Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) district provisions to help finance energy-efficiency improvements will have to wait a little longer.

But an official of the Vermont Energy Investment Corp. (VEIC), which is expected to help the 32 Vermont PACE towns administer the program, said progress is being made in what he and others say is a complex process of putting regulations and financial backing in place for the $20 million statewide program.

SHOREHAM/MIDDLEBURY — As Vermont’s local food market continues to thrive, two Addison County farms are building up — literally.

Family-owned businesses Champlain Orchards in Shoreham and Happy Valley Orchard in Middlebury are both raising new structures on their respective properties this season. The rise of niche markets, especially fermented cider products, played an important role in the expansion of both orchards.

“We’ve been seeing a new type of customer,” said Bill Suhr of Champlain Orchards.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s been one year since Tropical Storm Irene wiped out roads, bridges and buildings throughout Vermont, taxing emergency management systems statewide.

That storm, and the weeks immediately after spent on emergency repairs, helped to get area town officials thinking more about the realities of disaster management, according to Tim Bouton, emergency response planner at the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC).

“People are more conscious that there could be a large-scale disaster here,” Bouton said.
