Industry mulls post-nuclear rates

According to spokespeople at the state’s two largest utility companies — Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) and Green Mountain Power (GMP) — not too much.

Plugging in Vermont's future

ADDISON COUNTY — Throughout Addison County, residents might notice a blue Toyota Prius with the license plate “PLUG IN.” That’s the new plug-in hybrid vehicle that the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) is using to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, cut costs and, planners hope, help drive Vermont into the future.

New law aids DUI offenders

ADDISON COUNTY — Many drunk driving offenders will have the ability to get on the road quicker beginning next month if they install a state-approved ignition interlock system designed to ensure they are not operating under the influence.

The reason is Act 126, a new state law passed by the Legislature in 2010 that takes effect on July 1.

VY plant draws local fire

Maple season: a sweet success

ADDISON COUNTY — While Vermont’s heavy snows and chilly spring temperatures drove many local residents into a frenzy, maple sugarmakers across the state celebrated their sweetest year in almost a century.

Vermont took the maple cake once again, leading the nation in syrup production with a whopping 1.14 million gallons in 2011, which accounts for about 40 percent of the nation’s 2.79 million gallons, according to figures released this month by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Federal declaration to bring flood aid to Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — The federal government last week responded to pressure from Gov. Peter Shumlin and Vermont’s congressional delegation, granting a Major Federal Disaster Declaration to seven Vermont counties, including Addison, affected by this spring’s record-breaking floods.

The declaration, which the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced this past Wednesday, will allow residents and business owners affected by the flooding to apply for federal aid and low-interest loans to rebuild and repair damaged property.

January to May wettest on record

ADDISON COUNTY — Those who sensed that the first five months of this year were wetter than normal were correct. Precipitation at the Burlington International Airport so far in 2011 is 24.4 inches — almost double the 12.41 inches in a typical year.

“Last year was close to normal,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Neiles. “We were 0.32 inches below normal. Now we’re 11.99 inches above normal.”

Flooding sets stage for mosquitoes

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Usually, more water means more mosquitoes. But this record-breaking spring of rainfall has created so much water — particularly of the moving variety — that floodplain-borne mosquitoes have had a tough time multiplying, according to state and local insect-control officials.

In flood's wake, groups monitor water quality

ADDISON COUNTY — As floodwaters in Lake Champlain recede, groups across the state are paying close attention to water quality issues in Vermont’s largest body of water.

It’s already clear that phosphorous and sediment levels are high in the lake, and that flooding and high winds have caused a great deal of shoreline erosion, according to Bill Howland, manager of the Lake Champlain Basin Program in Grand Isle.
