Movie review: A Simple Favor

A Simple Favor— Running Time: 1:57 — Rating: R

“A Simple Favor” hands us the gift of unpredictability. After dutifully trying to follow its early twists and turns, we realize there’s no point to that so we settle in to enjoy its craziness. What unfolds is quite like movies of the ’40s and ’50s when audiences didn’t ask comedies to make sense; they just asked them to make fun. That happens here.

Wells are drying up in three northern county towns

Posted on October 4, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — The drought that continues to plague northern Vermont has begun to affect Addison County.

Residents in Ferrisburgh, Monkton and Starksboro reported that their wells have run dry.

Penny Oosterman said her well in Ferrisburgh dried up about a month ago.

“I had just bought a brand-new washer and dryer. Then one day I ran a load of laundry and nothing but dirt water came into the washer. It gunked everything up,” she said.

There hasn’t been any water since.

By the way for Oct. 4

Posted on October 4, 2018 |
By Addison Independent

The same good folks who launched the “Take It Or Leave It” free farm stand in Lincoln have come up with another idea to help their neighbors: Lincoln Apple Day. Slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Burnham Hall, the event will teach local residents how to make cider, applesauce and apple pie. Participants are asked to bring their own apples; any extra food at the end of the day will be distributed to those who need it. Anyone with questions about the event should call Jim Brown 453-4563.

Fahrenheit 11/9 — Running Time: 2:08 — Rating: R

“Fahrenheit 11/9” is a tough movie to see, and a tough one to review. The current political climate is so divided that it’s a fair guess that people who see Michael Moore as a villain will stay away. Yes, toward the end he zeroes in on the Trump problem but the rest of the film is an invitation to left and right to address our national problems. He shows us those.

Book review: Bury the Lead: A Joe Gunther novel — by Archer Mayor

Posted on October 1, 2018 |
By Jenny Lyons

Book Review.jpg

(Minotaur Books)

Joe Gunther and his crew, some a little worse for wear, some decidedly more romantically inclined than ever, are tasked with unraveling the underpinnings of two cases at once: the discovery of a deceased Jane Doe near a ski trail on Bromley Mountain with an all-too-easy confession; the other, a murky set of circumstances surrounding multiple explosions at a grocery warehousing facility. And those events may or may not be related to the third dilemma Joe confronts — an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. Are these cases intertwined?

Dear Homeward Bound: My neighbors have a nervous dog

Posted on October 1, 2018 |
By The Addison Independent

Dear Homeward Bound,

Help! I have new neighbors and they have a dog that seems really nervous around us. I’m worried because our old neighbors had a super-friendly dog that was friendly with my 6-year-old son and would let him hug and kiss him all the time and I don’t know what this dog might do if my son gets too close to him.

Curious (and Worried!)
