Holiday sales come in strong

ADDISON COUNTY — The anecdotal reports from Main Street this year are promising: A last-minute influx of shoppers, and an uptick of interest in the “shop local” movement, meant many local retailers saw sales increase in December over the same month in 2008.

That good news came late in the month, though, following what was for many businesses a sluggish two weeks at the start of the holiday season.

“It was pretty soft the first week and a half to two weeks,” said John Wallace, the owner of the Autumn Gold jewelry shop in Middlebury. “The end just burst wide open the last two weeks.”

17 county bridges face heightened state scrutiny

ADDISON COUNTY — Seventeen Addison County bridges will fall under increased scrutiny in coming years as the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) complies with a federal ramp-up in bridge safety efforts.

The 17 bridges are on a list of around 300 spans across the state now considered “scour critical,” or particularly vulnerable to erosion during high-water events that can eat away the footings or foundation of a bridge.

Public input sought for design of Champlain Bridge at Jan. 4 meeting (UPDATED)

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

VERGENNES — Turns out the design for the replacement for the Champlain Bridge actually has yet to be set in stone, so to speak.

The Dec. 15 recommendation by the Lake Champlain Bridge Project’s Public Advisory Committee (PAC) to go with option No. 6 of the six bridge designs presented by officials form the New York and Vermont transportation departments — and the overwhelming concurrence with that choice by the public in an online survey last month — are just recommendations.

County preparing to celebrate New Year's

Posted on December 30, 2009 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — This New Year’s Eve, thousands will watch the ball drop in Times Square. Here in Vermont, there won’t be police barricades or headlining pop singers, but there will be plenty of other events around the county to ring in 2010.

Bristol’s fourth annual Best Night celebration will feature a series of concerts and activities in three town venues — Holley Hall, First Baptist Church and the Walkover Gallery. Events will run from 3 until 11 p.m., starting with a fire organ on the Bristol Green and finishing with a dance party in Holley Hall.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s a busy time of year for Addison County residents — and a busier time still for the man of the hour, Kris Kringle, who is slated to swing by local homes late Thursday night on his annual Christmas rounds.

Kringle was unavailable for comment Monday at his North Pole workshop, but sources close to the man confirmed that Kringle, who also goes by “Santa Claus” and “Jolly Old St. Nick,” had spent much of December deep in plans for the big event.

Farmers consider changes to land conservation deal

web_lorenwood.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Loren Wood was 18 years old in 1972 when he and his family relocated from New Hampshire to Vermont, leaving a farm just outside of Manchester to set up shop in Shoreham.

At the time, Wood remembers, the farmland around Manchester was slowly beginning to be transformed by development — a house here and a house there.

“It’s not hard to see why we chose to conserve our land,” Wood said. “It bothers me to see good farmland go to houses.”

ADDISON COUNTY — The U.S. Department of Agriculture late last week announced that emergency aid payments, approved by federal lawmakers earlier this fall, will soon be on their way to struggling dairy farmers.

The new Dairy Economic Loss Assistance Payment (DELAP) program will distribute $290 million to dairy farmers across the country. The funding is part of a $350 million dairy assistance measure Congress approved in October at the request of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

More kids sit down to breakfast at school

ADDISON COUNTY — The number of Vermont schoolchildren participating in school breakfast programs is on the rise, but many school administrators and food program directors are finding that federal and state reimbursements for the programs aren’t covering the costs of those initiatives.

On average, almost 15,000 low-income schoolchildren eat a free school breakfast every day in Vermont. That number represents a 15.5 percent increase over last year’s figures, according to the Food Research and Action Center, and marks the largest percent increase in the country.

Cow Power farms find reprieve in new rates

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Three “Cow Power” farms that pioneered the generation of electricity from manure are suffering because they say the price they are paid for that power doesn’t meet the cost of producing it. Now they are getting some relief from the Public Service Board, which last week approved a temporary hike in that price.
