Student of the Week, 9/18/2017, Andrea "Andi" Boe

Middlebury Union High School is pleased to introduce Andrea “Andi” Boe, a lifelong resident of Middlebury, as our first student of the week. She is the daughter of Kathy and Kelly Boe and a member of the Class of 2018 at MUHS. Her older sister, Sara, is a senior at McGill University in Montreal.

Andi was the recipient of one of the school’s highest honors in the spring of her junior year when she was presented with the Dorey Cup. It is given annually to a male and female student based on their academic record, athletic ability and leadership skills.

Food shelf use rises as crop yields decrease

MIDDLEBURY — The Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) food shelf in Middlebury is seeing a substantial uptick in demand from Addison County residents who are having a hard time making ends meet.

That, in itself, is of major concern to HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross. But the problem is compounded by the fact that this demand is occurring before the toughest winter months, and Montross knows there are many other hungry people in more distant reaches of the county who simply can’t get to the HOPE food shelf.

Keeping the heat on global warming; Interfaith Climate Action Network melds prayer and activism

MIDDLEBURY — When President Donald Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement this summer, Addison County’s Interfaith Climate Action Network (ICAN) took action. The group held a vigil on the Middlebury town green and has continued to hold weekly vigils every Saturday.

Now, as climate experts weigh in on the ways that global warming added even more destructive power to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the group is looking for even more ways to engage.

Celebrate Alpaca Farm Day this weekend

During the month of September alpaca breeders from across the United States will invite the public to come to their farm to meet their alpacas and learn more about these inquisitive, unique animals.  This weekend, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Maple View Farm Alpacas and the Vermont Fiber Mill & Studio will welcome guests to come visit the farm, mill and 23 alpacas at 185 Adams Road in Brandon.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers cite drivers for drunken driving

ADDISON COUNTY  — Vermont State Police cited two local drivers with drunk driving in separate recent incidents.

In the first, troopers stopped a vehicle on Main Street Vergennes on Thursday, Sept 7, at five minutes before 6 p.m. The officer screened the driver, identified as 34-year-old Jesse Stearns of Ferrisburgh, for driving under the influence. When Stearns failed the screening, Trooper Flansburg arrested him, took Stearns to the New Haven state police barracks for processing and released him with a citation for driving under the influence, second offense.

Route 116 construction to run through 2018

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) this week will begin a multi-year paving project that extends from Starksboro to Middlebury.

Pike Industries was awarded the contract for the project, which extends for approximately 20 miles along Route 116 from just south of Robinson School in Starksboro to the Route 7/Route 116 intersection in Middlebury. The project does not include paving within Bristol village.

It's all in a day's work for a Vermont State Police trooper

ADDISON COUNTY — The invitation to ride along with a Vermont State Police trooper got a little intimidating after reading the requisite consent form. The passenger — in this case, a reporter — shouldn’t rule out the possibility of being whisked at a high rate of speed to a crime scene and the risk of injury, and yes, even death.

This scribe swallowed even harder when VSP Sgt. Blake Cushing of the New Haven barracks recommended close scrutiny of the location of the cruiser’s radio in case the trooper were incapacitated and needed backup.

ACTR bus company marks 25 years on the go

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) began its journey back in 1992 with a handful of volunteer drivers believing they could make a difference for shut-ins, the disabled and people who couldn’t afford their own vehicles.

A quarter-century later, ACTR provides more than 180,000 rides per year through six different public bus routes helping people get around Addison County and to Rutland and Burlington.
