ALL ABOARD! Youngsters keep Sheldon trains rolling

MIDDLEBURY — If post-holiday season blues have already set in, the Sheldon Museum has a cure — at least until Sunday. The museum’s annual train exhibit will be taken down after this weekend, and volunteer Alex Shashok, 9, has a word of advice for anyone still on the fence about making a trip to 1 Park St. in downtown Middlebury in the next few days.

“It’s not going to be a boring waste of time,” Shashok said. “It’s going to be like the polar opposite of that.”

Porter struggles with electronic records system, sees big cost overrun

Women's hockey tournament raises funds for cancer patients

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Otters and the Middlebury Mystix, two women’s community ice hockey teams, will host the 14th annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” hockey tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20, at the Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury. Last year, the event raised over $70,000 for the statewide Cancer Patient Support Program, and the Otters and Mystix are hoping to break that record in 2013. Over the course of its history, the Face Off Against Breast Cancer has raised over $270,000 for charity.

Cabin Fever bird talks take flight this Thursday

MIDDLEBURY — Otter Creek Audubon’s sixth annual Cabin Fever Lecture Series for winter 2013 will kick off this Thursday evening. All events take place at 7 p.m. at Ilsley Library in Middlebury on the second Thursday of each month between January and March. They are free and open to the public.

Annual police toy drive provides gifts for 21 families

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Christmas Day completed their second annual toy drive, which this year provided gifts to 44 children in 21 families based in Middlebury, Ripton, Vergennes, Weybridge and Brandon.

Local community members and businesses donated gifts for the toy drive, which also featured the participation of the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, Vergennes Police Department and Vermont State Police. The gifts went to children who otherwise would have not found much under the tree on Dec. 25.

Windstorm rips through county

ADDISON COUNTY — The first day of winter on Dec. 21 brought a storm with hurricane-strength gales that knocked down trees and power lines, plunging more than 43,000 Vermonters into the dark beginning early Friday morning. The weather caused at least one fatality.

Green Mountain Power said that 34,270 of its customers were affected by the windstorm over the weekend, while the Vermont Electric Cooperative reported over 9,000.

United Way lags in effort to reach $700,000 goal

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) has reached the halfway mark in its 2012 effort to raise $700,000 for local nonprofit causes, and organizers of the annual fund drive will soon mount an all-out push to try and reach the goal by next March.

ACSU candidates pull out; board to mull next steps

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union’s search for a new superintendent will continue after a third bid to locate a top executive failed to woo a finalist on Friday, Dec. 21.

District officials confirmed late Friday afternoon that both finalists — Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne Collins and John W. Johnson, an executive with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction — withdrew their names from consideration, citing personal reasons.
