Weather, underwater debris delay Champlain Bridge work

ADDISON — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to give Flatiron Construction a 65-day schedule adjustment in which to complete the new Champlain Bridge in view of harsh winter weather and underwater debris that have hampered work progress.

But officials said on Friday they are confident that Flatiron will still be able to get the new bridge completed by the previously targeted deadline of Oct. 9, and the NYSDOT is considering marshalling additional equipment at added expense to help expedite work.

Addison planners to revisit zoning laws

ADDISON — Addison planners on Feb. 21 agreed to recommend to selectmen that changes to town zoning made last summer be reversed, at least until the planning commission goes over them again and warns them publicly.

Planners also said the changes made to setbacks and waiver procedures late last summer and early last fall reflected their work and intent, and were not, as some citizens had alleged, made by selectboard chairman Jeff Kauffman, then the zoning administrator.

Addison school board seat contested in open race

ADDISON — On March 1, Addison residents will have a choice in an Addison Central School board race between a current board member who was appointed to her position in April 2010, and a former board member who stepped down in the 1990s.

The incumbent is Michele Kelly, who worked for 40 years as a college professor, 18 at the Community College of Philadelphia. A married mother of four and grandmother of six, Kelly said her ties to Addison go back 30 years.

Provencher, Hunt square off in Addison selectboard

ADDISON — Addison residents on March 1 will have a choice between two long-tenured public servants in a race for three-year term on the town’s selectboard.

Incumbent Kimball Provencher and challenger Rob Hunt have about a combined and evenly split 40 years of service to Addison between them.

Addison union board seat up for grabs

ADDISON — Addison residents on March 1 will have a clear choice between two candidates for one seat on the proposed 12-member Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board.

That Unified Union (UU) board could replace the five boards that now operate the four ANwSU schools, but will only come into being if all five ANwSU towns back the one-board unification plan on Town Meeting Day.

Addison considers school district unification

ADDISON — A lively Feb. 8 Addison Central School (ACS) forum on one-board governance of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union aired both unification’s potential benefits for Addison and the objections some residents there have about the plan.

The fate of the proposed 12-member board that would own and operate the four ANwSU schools may ride on voting in Addison on March 1. All five ANwSU towns must vote yes if the proposal is to succeed.

Zoning changes are questioned in Addison

ADDISON — The Addison Planning Commission on Feb. 21 will review changes allegedly made to town zoning laws last summer by Addison’s interim zoning administrator Jeff Kauffman — also chairman of Addison’s selectboard.

Some Addison residents believe Kauffman overstepped the bounds of his authority and made major changes to the zoning laws, alterations that were not approved by planners at their Aug. 16, 2010, meeting.

Group prepares for Champlain Bridge blowout

ADDISON — The new Champlain Bridge isn’t due to be unveiled for another eight months, but a group of citizens from both sides of the lake is already planning a two-day inaugural extravaganza they hope will serve the added purpose of getting tourists and shoppers reacquainted with the region.

The celebration is being organized by the Lake Champlain Bridge Community (LCBC), a group that will spend the coming months brainstorming ideas and raising funds for a fitting opening tribute for the $70 million span.

Addison forum looks at education options

ADDISON — A Thursday meeting called by an Addison resident and opponent of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification drew 16 other town residents to Addison Central School, but most who attended said they backed unification and were skeptical of the other options, a private town academy and/or a voucher system.

The headmaster of The Mountain School at Winhall, Daren Houck, also said on Friday that some statements in the flyer promoting the meeting and made at the meeting by organizer Carol Kauffman about the intentions of Mountain School officials were inaccurate.

Shumlin discusses future of dairy in county

ADDISON — One Tuesday late last month, the Addison firehouse was full of dairy farmers — most from Addison County, and some from farther afield — having a long talk with Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin about the future of farming.

“We needed to see what was coming down the pipe,” said Phil Livingston, a New Haven dairy farmer and co-president of the Addison County Young Farmers group, which organized the event.

He, along with his co-presidents John Chamberlain and Derrick Dykstra, hold monthly events for the group, covering a range of topics related to the dairy business.
