Champlain Bridge begins to take shape

ADDISON, Vt./CROWN POINT, N.Y. — Contractors have completed most of the underwater sub-structure of the new Champlain Bridge and will work through the winter on some of the more visible elements of the new span that is slated to be finished by Oct. 9, 2011.

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) officials on Thursday provided their first substantial, on-location update on progress in building the new bridge, a $70 million project being undertaken by Colorado-based Flatiron Construction.

Around the Region: Addison looks at town hall uses

ADDISON — Addison selectmen and the town’s committee working on the future of Addison’s former town hall have continued working toward finding what it might cost to make the building functional and how the town might best use it.
At selectmen’s Oct. 5 meeting, town hall committee head John Spencer said the committee was just about ready to send out requests to architects for proposals to perform a “needs assessment” on the building, which stands on church property near the town clerk’s office.
The building currently lacks a septic system and needs restoration work.

ANwSU invites public to discuss unification on Tuesday

ADDISON — A Tuesday forum at Addison Central School will look at the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification process. It is sponsored by the ANwSU committee that is spearheading what is expected to become the third formal effort since 2005 to unify union governance under one board.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., committee members will to address unification issues, including those that led to Addison’s petitioned defeat last year of the one-board initiative. Addison overturned its approval of unification in May 2009 after all five ANwSU towns backed it overwhelmingly that March.

Moments of inspiration spark young career

ADDISON — Along the way to choosing a career as an artist, Addison resident and 2010 college graduate T.J. Cunningham experienced two epiphanies.

One came five years ago, when Cunningham, then 17, worked at Addison’s Bridge Restaurant. Cunningham had always since the age of 4 or 5 spent time, in his own words, “drawing pictures and creating things and painting.”
