Mother, daughter killed in Brandon crash

BRANDON — A mother and daughter were killed in a head-on collision on Route 7 in Brandon just south of Otter Valley Union High School last Friday afternoon.

According to police, Kathryn Long, 63, and her mother Ruth Long, 93, both of Sudbury, were killed when their 2004 Subaru Legacy station wagon crossed the centerline and hit a Proctor Gas truck head on.

Brandon Police Chief Chris Brickell said the accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, and it prompted police to close Route 7 to traffic in both directions for several hours.

Brandon under presssure to locate new town office space

BRANDON — Two years, two months and numerous mistakes have landed the town of Brandon back to square one without office space and now, a deadline to find some, fast.

The long-overdue renovation of the town offices on Center Street ground to a halt last week after the Vermont League of Cities and Towns settled the town’s claim on the building at a much lower payout than anticipated.

Expired drugs pick-up in Brandon is Oct. 26

BRANDON — The Brandon Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its seventh opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. People can bring their medications for disposal to the Brandon Police Department on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The police department is at 301 Forest Dale Road in Brandon. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Arts council honors achievements of four Vermonters

BRANDON — Internationally renowned folk artist Warren Kimble and famed novelist/poet/biographer Jay Parini were among four people honored at the annual Vermont Council of the Arts Annual Gala held this past Tuesday night at the Brandon Town Hall. Bruce Bouchard, who joined the Paramount Theater as executive director in 2008, and Carol Driscoll, executive director of The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, received honors for “meritorious service to the arts.”

Prindle Wissler's artwork on display in Brandon

BRANDON — The Compass Music and Arts Center offers a great opportunity to see a selection of work by one of the area’s most beloved artists. Prindle Wissler was a lifelong artist and teacher who studied art at Skidmore College and Columbia University but was a lifetime learner, making discoveries and messes, as she would say, right up to the time of her death in 2011 at the age of 99.

Brandon community promoter Bette Moffett dead at 89

BRANDON — A light has gone out in Brandon.

Community lover, friend and local treasure Bette Moffett died at home on Sept. 11 at the age of 89.

Bette inhabited the idea of community spirit. Her love of Brandon and its residents was boundless, as evidenced by her tireless efforts to support, enhance and promote the place she called home since 1968.

A Service of Celebration to honor her life with music and memories was scheduled held at the Brandon Inn on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.

Brandon chef recieves top Vermont honors

BRANDON — Chef Robert Barral, executive chef/owner of Café Provence in Brandon, has been selected as Chef of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. The award was bestowed at the Vermont Chamber Hospitality Gala, held at the Mountain Top Inn and Resort on Sept. 10 in Chittenden.

Barral is originally from the Montpelier area in France. He has been the executive chef in some of the finest kitchens in the world, including the Four Seasons in Boston, the New England Culinary Institute and Café Provence, which he opened in 2004.

Silent movie classics to be screened in Brandon

BRANDON — Two comic icons of the silent film era will return to the big screen for one night only, as the Brandon Town Hall presents a silent comedy double feature on Saturday, Sept. 14. On the program are Harold Lloyd starring in “Dr. Jack” (1922) and Buster Keaton in “Seven Chances” (1925).

The show starts at 7 p.m. at Brandon Town Hall and is open to the public. Admission is free; donations are encouraged, with proceeds to support ongoing renovation of Brandon Town Hall.

Brandon rallies around family made homeless by fire

BRANDON — One week after a fire destroyed all they own, the Mahoney family of Brandon is staying upbeat, grateful to their community, and grateful for their lives.

“It’s humbling,” Mike Mahoney said in a phone interview Monday. “It’s been hard, but we just want to thank the community and the outlying area. Everyone’s just been wonderful.”
