Hospitality industry upbeat after Irene

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Inn and hotel operators in Addison County and Brandon are concerned that Vermont’s recent portrayal as a storm-ravaged state might be discouraging some prospective tourists. But they remain buoyed last week by rebuilding efforts and are confident that bookings will be strong for the critical fall foliage season.

BRANDON — The Brandon Congregational Church bells were ringing at 5 p.m. last Friday as Route 7 through downtown Brandon was re-opened to traffic a mere 122 hours after floodwaters scourged the road.

Route 73 from Goshen to Rochester gets help

ROCHESTER — Residents of Rochester, one of 13 communities isolated for five days by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene, were well under way with clean-up efforts late Thursday afternoon as Route 125 over Middlebury Gap to Route 100 was opened for emergency vehicles and vital traffic late Wednesday.

Brandon downtown under water, Route 7 closed

BRANDON — The heart of Brandon was devastated by a disastrous flood Sunday as rains from Tropical Storm Irene caused the Neshobe River to overflow and rage through the downtown.

Hundreds of roads and dozens of bridges around Vermont were washed out during the storm, which brought seven or more inches of rain to the state in a day’s time. The event is the worst natural disaster to hit the Green Mountain State since the flood of 1927.

Floods delay opening of Brandon-area schools

Update (9/1/11):

BRANDON — Schoolchildren in Brandon, Leicester, Whiting and Goshen, as well as in the rest of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, got three extra days of summer vacation courtesy of Tropical Storm Irene.

After a flurry of meetings, officials from RNeSU and the town of Brandon on Tuesday decided to postpone the beginning of the school year until Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the wake of Sunday’s epic flooding.

McKernon era ends in Brandon

BRANDON — After a stellar run of providing classic, well-built construction and sage advice in the Brandon area, a well-known local builder has finally hung up his hard hat.

Jack McKernon, founder of The McKernon Group Inc., has retired from his long time position as owner/CEO of the Brandon-based business. Kevin Birchmore, president of the company and McKernon’s business partner for the last 25 years, has acquired the ownership position of the company and has taken on a partner, Justus Cameron, who is the newly appointed vice president.

Local hatmakers get all dressed up with help from their sheep

BRANDON — What do you get when you mix a mother of three who had some sheep with an artistic hat maker in Vermont? Fabulousness, from the grass up.

Sam Stone of Brandon and Nora Swan of Ripton met five years ago when their sons were in the same play group. Two years into their friendship, Swan said she wanted to make something with sheep’s wool and Stone shared an idea she had to make baby booties, along with a book that told the story of each sheep in her small flock.

Vt. artists consider 'Power of Place' at Brandon gallery

BRANDON — Vermonters who spend every day driving up and down Route 7, weaving through the state’s many back roads, or hiking on scenic trails can sometimes come to take for granted the striking beauty of the scenery around them.

On July 7, Brandon’s Gallery in the Field opened an exhibit called “The Power of Place: Landscapes and Mindscapes from Vermont,” featuring work from four Vermont artists, that reminded the roughly 300 people in attendance of the splendor in Vermont’s landscape.

Kilroy is here, at the Brandon Town Hall

BRANDON — A convergence this year of three significant anniversaries, the town of Brandon’s 250th, the Brandon Town Hall’s 150th and WWII’s 70th, inspired Brandon Town Players’ Director Dennis Marden to stage the WWII musical comedy “Kilroy Was Here.” The show, which opened last Friday night and finishes its run on July 15 and 16, is the first major musical to hit the Town Hall stage in almost 30 years.

RNeSU teachers sign a new three-year pact

BRANDON — Almost two years of negotiation have led not only to a new contract, but better relations between the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union (RNeSU) and local teaching associations, the parties said.

RNeSU, the Rutland Northeast Education Association and the Otter Valley Teachers’ Association have agreed to a 1.6 percent increase on the base salary schedule for the current 2010-11 school year along with a 1.74 percent for 2011-12 and 2.37 percent for 2012-13.
