BRIDPORT — Citing a mounting interest in locally grown organic grains, Ben and Theresa Gleason are expanding their Bridport milling operation that has been the forefront of Vermont’s reemerging grains industry.

Gleason Grains is already the largest operation of its kind in the state, but armed with a grant from the Farm Viability Program, the farm is doubling production this year with the help of three other Addison County farmers.

Bridport backs school budget

Posted on May 6, 2010 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents on Tuesday voted 125-75 in favor of a 2010-2011 elementary school spending plan that was slightly leaner than the version defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The approved, $1,330,817 spending plan was $6,158 less than the budget voters rejected by a 179-172 tally last March. The savings were derived from reduced health care premiums ($2,158) and reduced professional development expenses ($4,000).

Bridport school budget revote set

Posted on May 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents will return to the polls this Tuesday, May 4, to cast votes on a proposed 2010-2011 elementary school budget that is $6,158 leaner than the spending plan that was defeated by less than 10 votes on Town Meeting Day.

Voters rejected the original spending plan of $1,336,975 by a 179-172 tally. It proved to be one of the few school budget defeats in the state but was the second year in a row that Bridport residents had rejected their elementary spending plan.

MDs rethink blood transfusions

Posted on March 25, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRIDPORT — A team of topnotch doctors from around the world landed in Bridport at the end of February to reexamine commonly held medical beliefs about blood transfusions.

The four-day conference took place from Feb. 26 through March 1, and included doctors from as far afield as Austria and Australia. At the heart of their research is the concern that blood transfusions are risky, expensive and often unnecessary — and yet, they continue to be done frequently in American hospitals and around the world.

OVUHS, Bridport scratched from school watch list

By Lee J. Kahrs and Kathryn Flagg

BRIDPORT/BRANDON — Administrators at Bridport Central School and Otter Valley Union High School breathed a collective sigh of relief on Tuesday after the Vermont Department of Education removed the schools from a list of Vermont’s 10 persistently lowest achieving schools.

The schools were initially tagged for the list in a memo released last week, but state education officials on Tuesday said “human error” meant that two of the identified schools — Bridport and OV — were mistakenly included.

By Kathryn Flagg

BRIDPORT — Three weeks ago, Gedeleine Franklin was bundled out of the orphanage she knew as home after a slip in an underwater fault plunged Haiti into chaos.

Ten days ago, the two-year-old little girl was hustled onto an airplane with 80 other children bound for Miami. Aid workers, airline employees and orphanage volunteers cradled the children as they made the halting, unfamiliar trek out of Haiti.

Bridport family waiting for news about planned Hatian adoption

BRIDPORT — When Annette Franklin heard about last week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, her first thoughts flew to the orphanage in the hills above Petionville and the little girl, just 2 years old, she held in her arms last summer.

The girl’s name is Gedeleine, and the 2-year-old is one of 160 orphans at God’s Littlest Angels, an independent, nondenominational orphanage in poverty-stricken Haiti. Since December of 2008, Annette and Tim Franklin, and their four children, have been looking forward to welcoming the child into their Bridport home.

Proceeds from locally made film help Afghanistan

BRIDPORT — Jill Vickers still remembers walking into the small hotel in a remote town in northern Afghanistan shoulder-to-shoulder with a handful of other young American women. Snowdrifts, she remembered, had accumulated in the halls of the hotel, and when the women made their way to their door, they realized they would be spending the night in their sleeping bags on the floor in an unheated room.

Welcome to Afghanistan in 1969.
