Muslim Girls Making Change will bring slam poetry to Bristol

BRISTOL — Four Vermont Muslim teen slam poets who call themselves “Muslim Girls Making Change”will share their experiences at a One World Library Project program in Bristol in February. The teens, who are juniors at Burlington and South Burlington High School, perform slam poetry to express their passionate concerns. They will present and discuss their work on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Holley Hall in Bristol at a free event hosted by the One World Library Project and sponsored by Bristol Friends of the Arts.

Bristol board backs plan with 1 percent rise in town spending

BRISTOL — Last year at town meeting, Bristol voters said yes to an almost 10 percent hike in overall spending — largely to cover bond payments for the new fire station and South Street Bridge.

On Monday, the Bristol selectboard chose to offer voters a 2017-2018 plan calling for a 1.06 percent spending increase to $2,506,949.

The proposed amount to be raised by taxes is $2,139,887, a 1.07 percent increase over the $2,117,215 approved for 2016-2017.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby said that town officials knew last year was exceptional.

Bristol's pen master carves niche

BRISTOL — Keypads on our computers, smart phones or tablets might dominate a lot of our communication these days, but the good old fashioned pen hasn’t gone out of style either. Especially not the hand carved wooden pens made by Jim Cunningham in Bristol.

Early in his woodworking career, Cunningham ran a rustic handmade furniture company and was a member of Vermont WoodNet — a local group of woodcrafters. “WoodNet was a good group to help me get going,” he said.

Vermont Folk Rocker chairs to be raffled for arts benefit

New committee charged with determining cost of Mount Abe repairs

BRISTOL — The five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will again be asked to take a hard look at renovating the 48-year-old Mount Abraham Union High School facility, including possibly with funds from a bond.

“It’s really about planning and fiscal responsibility,” ANeSU Superintendent Patrick Reen said at a Mount Abe school board meeting Tuesday.

BRISTOL — Organization and focus. Those are the key ingredients for Alganesh Michael — a South Burlington chef who specializes in her native Eritrean and Ethiopian food. Forget carefully measured spices and ingredients, Michael said she “likes to mix things; I don’t like following directions.” She learned how to cook as a teenager from watching her mom and then trying it herself.

Surge in workers' comp raises Bristol police spending

BRISTOL — Residents of the Bristol Police District will likely be asked to approve a double-digit hike in taxpayer funds used to pay for the department budget in the coming fiscal year.

Town officials cited a dramatic surge in the cost of workers’ compensation coverage as the reason for the 17 percent increase.

Assistant principal says she will leave Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School is going to lose a second assistant principal.

David Ford left his assistant principal position at Mount Abe at the end of December, citing family reasons.

Now Assistant Principal Ellen Repstad said she will resign at the end of the school year, citing a lack of transparency in communication and a difference in values that puts efficiency above what’s best for kids.
