No one hurt in Bristol school bus accident

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police responded to an accident involving a school bus Wednesday afternoon in Bristol.

Police said around 3:20 p.m., a school bus driven by town resident Rachel Ashline attempted to back into a driveway along Burpee Road to turn around. The bus hit a pickup truck driven by Julianna Doherty of Monkton, who was driving north on the road, causing “severe contact damage” to that vehicle. The bus sustained minor damage.

Bristol Harvest Festival: food, fun and friends

BRISTOL — Leaves are ablaze with fiery colors and a crispness floats in the air so autumn must truly be here. Folks in Bristol will mark the change in season this Saturday with the 16th annual Harvest Festival, when families, neighbors and visitors gather on the town green for food, art and craft vendors, music and fun activities for the kids.

The event on the green will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with many ways to enjoy the day — and there will be a couple other activities off the green, too.

ANeSU proposes record $33 million Mt. Abe renovation bond

BRISTOL — Voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will decide on Election Day whether to approve a bond to pay for an ambitious renovation of Mount Abraham Union High School.

The MAUHS school board voted Sept. 16 to ask residents for a sum not to exceed $32.6 million to make substantial improvements to school.

Local herbalist promotes natural medicine

LINCOLN — As the United States grapples with burgeoning health care costs and Vermont trudges its way toward a single-payer system, a Lincoln woman is harking back to treatments of an older time — herbal medicine.

Emily French, a clinical herbalist, runs Sweetgrass Herbals out of her home. Through the business, she teaches classes about herbalism and natural medicine, and provides consultations for people seeking relief from simple rashes to chronic pain.

Mount Abe facilities committee offers tours

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Facilities Advisory Committee is conducting weekly tours of Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School in Bristol on Wednesday evenings. The tours start at 6:30 p.m. in the school lobby.

The tours began Sept. 10 and continue every Wednesday until Oct. 15.

During the summer the Facility Advisory Committee conducted several community engagements at the school and found building tours to be a very effective way to get community members through the doors.

Henna artist to offer history, culture talk

Henna artist Bridgette Bartlett will present “Henna: History, Culture and Rituals” on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol.

Bristol’s new playground generating strong feelings

BRISTOL — A spirited debate about a new playground on the town green has sprung up between residents in the past several weeks. Some described the not-yet-completed playground as an eyesore, while others chimed in to defend the months of hard work of playground organizers.

The discussion began with a series of posts on Front Porch Forum both criticizing and praising the playground project.

“The new playground is the ugliest thing I have ever seen,” wrote Scott and Stacie Ayotte on Aug. 29.

Almost Home Market is for sale

BRISTOL — A town institution is for sale in Bristol, but the owners say business is doing just fine.

Almost Home Market co-owner Beth Marr said she and fellow owner Gary Smith are selling the store, which has been a fixture of Bristol’s North Street for a decade.

“My business partner is not able to fulfill his partnership because of illness and I never intended on taking it solo,” Marr said, adding that she wants to pursue other interests.

BRISTOL — Two people were shot, one by a state trooper, during an incident Thursday evening on Pine Street in Bristol.

Both victims remain hospitalized on Friday afternoon, police said, but did not elaborate on their conditions.

Talk to focus on women's shelter in India

BRISTOL — Sister Lucy Kurien, founder and director of Maher, will give a free talk at the WalkOver Gallery this Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Chai and cookies will be served.

Maher is an NGO based in Pune, India, serving four Indian states. Maher’s primary purpose is to provide shelter and care to women in crisis. Maher also has children’s homes, homes for women with disabilities, homes for elderly women, and a home for men with physical and mental disabilities.
