Bristol board questions revised draft of town plan

BRISTOL — In preparation for the Bristol selectboard’s May 14 public hearing on the new draft of the town plan, the board met with the town’s planning commission at its Monday meeting (to read the draft, click here).

Selectwoman Carol Wells, wife of former planning commission Chair Tom Wells, took issue with the plan’s lack of clarity surrounding a key component: resource extraction.

Businesses in Bristol see spring reshuffling

BRISTOL — As the weather is warming up, so too is the Bristol business scene.

Among the many recent developments in the county’s second largest town are an ownership change at the Almost Home Market on North Street, a new ice cream shop set to move in on Main Street and new landlords for the old Bristol High School building, which houses a number of prominent businesses.

Bristol farm approved for Cow Power project

BRISTOL — The Vermont Public Service Board has given the green light to a major methane-to-electricity facility at one of the county’s largest dairy farms.

It was this past Jan. 6 that Four Hills Farm requested a certificate of public good from the Public Service Board to install and operate a 525kW methane electrical generating facility at its 722 Burpee Road headquarters in Bristol. Four Hills has 2,500 head of cattle, around 1,250 of which are currently being milked.

ANeSU teachers demand contract

BRISTOL — Dozens of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU) educators showed up at a joint meeting of the six district school boards Tuesday night to demand a new multi-year contract by the end of the school year.

The teachers have been working without a negotiated contract since June 30, 2010, and they’ve been doing so under imposed conditions.

Wheeler resigns from Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — After five years at Mount Abraham Union High School, Co-Principal Leon Wheeler will step down at the end of this school year to take up the head post at Winooski High School.

The decision was based on economic reasons, commuting distance and the opportunity to lead a diverse and developing school, said Wheeler.

Cash mob to hit Bristol businesses

BRISTOL — Watch out Bristol businesses, you’re about to get mobbed.

Cash mobbed that is.

Planned by a loose organization known as Cash Mob Vermont, a group of unknown size will descend upon the gateway to the Green Mountains this Saturday afternoon to patronize local businesses. Organizers from Cash Mob Vermont said that at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, anyone from anywhere can meet on the Bristol green to partake in the mobbing. The only thing you need to bring is cash, at least $20 to be precise.

Bristol school initiates free breakfast program

BRISTOL — For the first time, more than half the students at Bristol Elementary School meet the low-income guidelines for free and reduce-priced meals. In an attempt to stave off child hunger and rein in school finances, Bristol is offering free breakfasts to all of its students.

Bristol teen found

BRISTOL — Bristol police have found the local teenager who was reported missing on Sunday.
Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said on late Monday afternoon that they had found 15-year-old Destyni Cassatt, whose family reported her missing after having last seen by on Sunday.
Police began a search Sunday, including sending officers around to knock on doors in her neighborhood.
Gibbs thanked the public for help in locating the teenager, but did not provide information about how or when she was found.

Police on lookout for a Bristol teen

BRISTOL — Bristol police are looking for a local teen who was last seen by her family on Sunday, April 8, and who family said is in need of her medication.

The girl’s name is Destyni Cassatt, 15, of Bristol. She was last seen in Bristol wearing a purple zip-up hoodie, jeans and sneakers. She was also sporting bright pink hair. Police have been searching throughout town for Cassatt, whom they currently describe as being in a “defiant” state of mind.
