Bristol town plan shaping up, but critics warn language is vague

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — As the new Bristol town plan quickly takes form, the Bristol Planning Commission on Tuesday continued to grapple with the level of detail necessary to pass and implement an effective plan.

Commissioners and residents have debated for weeks how specific they need to make the language in the draft of a new town plan. Individuals on both sides of the long-running debate over whether gravel extraction should be permitted in certain town zones have called for more detailed language.

BRISTOL — Bristol residents have consistently expressed that they are concerned about the safety of children, joggers and bicyclists that frequent the stretch of Route 17/116 between downtown Bristol and Lincoln Road.

A “pedestrian feasibility study” will be conducted throughout the summer to provide the town with several options for constructing a pedestrian path along this precarious stretch of road.

ANeSU taxes rising to make up for deficits

Posted on May 30, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Tax rates in some Addison Northeast Supervisory Union towns likely will increase in the coming year by a penny more than they otherwise would have as school directors, on the advice of supervisory union officials, try to rein in operating deficits for all six district schools.

ANeSU interim business manager Susan Jefferies shifted into high gear early this month to quickly draw up fiscal action plans for each of the schools after audits released at that time showed the official cumulative deficits that the schools had run.

Dan's Place is out and ND's is in

BRISTOL — A tavern called ND’s, named after proprietors Nina Badger and David Bannister, is set to replace the bar formerly known as Dan’s Place on the east end of Main Street in Bristol by mid June.

After Dan Palmer closed his bar in February, he was unable to reopen as planned in April.

Fortunately for the loyal following of Dan’s Place frequenters, Badger (who helped Palmer initially decorate and set up his spot) and Bannister (one of Palmer’s investors) are promising a bar very reminiscent of its former self.

Bristol commission wrestles with language in town plan

BRISTOL — In its continuing effort to update the town plan, the Bristol Planning Commission on Tuesday dove into the “Resource Extraction” section of the proposed town plan and tore out a wide range of definitions from ensuing sections of the 120-page draft.

The plan has been a focus of attention as townspeople have debated the merits of a particular gravel pit proposal and sand and gravel extraction in general over the past several years. An application for gravel extraction by the Lathrop family has been the subject of litigation.
