Bristol teen finishes high school her way: Vermont Adult Learning provides alternate path to graduation

MIDDLEBURY — Hannah Gorton has never attended a traditional school. Nevertheless, the Bristol 17-year-old will soon have the credentials she needs to pursue higher education.

Gorton, who was homeschooled, will receive her GED on Thursday, June 8, at Vermont Adult Learning’s 2017 graduation and achievement ceremony in the Kirk Alumni Center at Middlebury College (see story on Page 14A).

Bristol Police Log: Police help man with mental health crisis

BRISTOL — On May 24 at 4:18 a.m., Bristol police were dispatched to Main Street near Rite Aid for a man reported to be experiencing a mental health crisis. An officer arrived to find the man in an agitated state. The man said he felt like people were trying to kill him.

The officer helped calm the man, who then agreed to come with the officer to Porter Hospital to meet with a counselor from the Counseling Service of Addison County.

Bristol American Legion honored six former POWs from around Vermont

BRISTOL — Bristol American Legion Post 19 hosted the 32nd Annual Vermont Chapter One EX-POW Banquet on Saturday, June 3 to honor the sacrifices these gentlemen made to insure the freedoms we have and enjoy today.

The six in attendance this year came from around the state:  Mr. Francis Angier, Williston; Mr. William Busier, Essex Jct; Mr. Clyde Cassidy, Calais; Mr. Richard Hamilton (Chapter One Commander), Brattleboro; Mr. Roger Layn, Monkton; and Mr. Ralph McClintock, Jericho.

Watercolor exhibit opens in Bristol June 9

BRISTOL — Art on Main will present an exhibit of watercolor paintings and prints by artist Ginny Joyner.  The exhibit opens Friday, June 9, from 4-6 p.m. with an artist’s reception and wine tasting by Almost Home of Bristol and will be on display through mid-July.

Ginny Joyner is a well-known Vermont painter and illustrator from Colchester. She has a colorful, joyful style that celebrates the subjects she chooses whether it be a garden of lush peonies, an illustrated broadside of cheeses from around the world or a goddess in a Zen-like setting.

Memorial gift helps kids enjoy summer: Dibley donors expand Bristol Rec scholarship fund

BRISTOL — More five-town kids will get the chance to go to a Bristol Recreation Department summer camp — play in the river, make pottery, become a superhero — thanks to friends and family of the late Matt Dibley.

Last week, participants in the First Annual Matt Dibley Memorial Backyard Hockey Tournament donated $750 to the recreation department’s scholarship fund in Dibley’s memory.

New flavor of community support: Bristol company expands ice cream CSA

BRISTOL — Eliza La Rocca has always loved ice cream.

“I actually went through a period from elementary school to middle school where I was sort of obsessed with it,” said the ice cream impresaria half of Bristol’s Farmhouse Chocolates and Ice Cream. “Wherever we’d go, I’d immediately point out ‘Oh, there’s an ice cream shop ... and there’s another.’”

A stint in Italy leading food tours got her hooked on “the clean and bold” flavors Italians bring to gelato.

Bristol Police Log: Police helped with bicycle safety

BRISTOL — On May 12 a Bristol police officer assisted in coordinating and completing a bicycle rodeo with a volunteer group at the Bristol Elementary School.

Students were instructed on safety checks and practiced safe operation of their bicycles without incident.

Bristol sewer and water rates to go up July 1

BRISTOL — Bristol water and sewer rates will go up July 1 — water by a single-digit percentage, sewer by double digits.

Current water rates have been in place since 2013.

“At a certain point if you don’t increase rates you’re just kicking that can down the road,” explained Town Administrator Therese Kirby. “Prices go up because of inflation, electricity goes up, supply rates go up, your contract terms go up. Things increase. So rates need to increase to cover the operation and maintenance of the system.”

Mount Abe renovation committee wants to match school's needs to community's pocketbook

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School Renovation Committee is wrestling with how to get the most bang for the buck when refurbishing the nearly 50-year-old high school building in Bristol.

At its May 15 meeting, the committee also strove to establish priorities within a price tag the community would support.

Bristol Scout pulls Holley Hall kiosk plan

BRISTOL — An Eagle Scout project to construct a kiosk with an electronic message board in front of Bristol’s Holley Hall has been cancelled.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby informed the Bristol selectboard Monday night that Bristol teenager Victor Hinojosa, who wanted to build the kiosk in part to Eagle rank, had contacted her over the weekend to say that he would be pursuing a different community service project to attain the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank.
