Battle against drugs strains small Bristol police force

BRISTOL — Yet another recent heroin bust has highlighted Bristol’s ongoing struggle with drug-related crime that has strained its small police force.

Despite dozens of arrests over the past 12 months, heroin remains pervasive in pockets of the small community, emblematic of a statewide struggle with opiate addiction and its consequences.

Police say an influx of out-of-town drug dealers has made investigations more difficult and time-consuming.

Panel recommends MAUHS renovations

BRISTOL — A committee charged with evaluating the feasibility of making repairs to Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School issued its report to the district school board, recommending that the district pursue a renovation project.

“It is the position of this committee that the community is ready for an upgrade to the facility,” the report states. “We believe it is now up to the board and concerned citizens to advocate for the scope of changes to be performed.”

Bristol cops ask voters for new ride

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday discussed budget proposals for the water, sewer and police departments, and inched toward completing a draft of the town budget to put before voters on Town Meeting Day. The board also discussed creating a new zoning district around Bristol Pond.

Bristol Fire Department elects new officers, taps LaRose as chief

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Department on Saturday elected new officers at its annual meeting, and installed Brett LaRose as the new chief.

LaRose has been with the department since 1995. He replaces outgoing chief John “Peeker” Heffernan, who served as chief for six years. Heffernan on Tuesday expressed confidence in the department’s choice of LaRose.

“I think he’ll do a great job — he’s been doing hard work, and he deserves credit,” Heffernan said.

Teens display their 'talents' in Mr. Christmas Tree pageant

BRISTOL — Around 250 people crowded into Holley Hall in Bristol on Dec. 16 to watch the first ever Young Life Mr. Christmas Tree pageant.

Six senior boys from Mount Abraham Union High School competed, in traditional pageant style, with a formal wear interview, bathing suit, and talent portions followed by a parade of “Living Christmas Trees.” Each young man was given the name of a type of Christmas tree and wore sashes with those names displayed.

ANeSU: New substitute staffing policy will save money

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams told the ANeSU executive committee on Jan. 7 that the district’s October hire of an outside company to take over substitute staffing would save the district both time and money.

The district has hired Kelly Services, a company that specializes in temporary staffing nationwide, on Oct. 17, 2013, and the district will begin working with Kelly Services on Feb. 3.

Bristol recreation department pitches budget

BRISTOL — The head of the town recreation department presented a draft budget at the selectboard meeting on Jan. 6.

Recreation Director Darla Senecal proposed a budget of $176,899, a 10 percent increase from last year. Senecal explained to the selectboard that the increase was due to health care changes mandated by the Affordable Care Act.

“We tried to keep the department as level-funded as possible, and made cuts where we could,” Senecal said in an interview Tuesday. “We have a very slim budget to begin with.”

Bristol man arrested again

BRISTOL — A Bristol man on Jan. 8 found himself under arrest for the second time in three weeks, police said.

Bristol police cited Samuel Lewis Hellmuth, 36, into court for violating a relief from abuse order and violating conditions of release issued by a judge from a previous arrest on the same charge.
