Tari Shattuck grants boost five-town elementary schools

BRISTOL — The Tari Shattuck Educational Foundation of Bristol recently funded nine projects in the elementary schools of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union to support innovative educational opportunities developed by local teachers. This school year, as part of its support of excellence in teaching and learning in ANeSU, the foundation is granting up to $1,000 for projects to each of the ANeSU elementary schools.

Red Cedar School's Werner-Gavrin nominated for 'Life-Changer' award

BRISTOL — Jacquie Werner-Gavrin, founder and director of the Red Cedar School in Bristol, has been nominated for the 2015-2016 national LifeChanger of the Year award.

Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, the LifeChanger of the Year program recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Werner-Gavrin was nominated by parent William Aikman.

Selectboard race shapes up in Bristol

BRISTOL — The one contested race on the Bristol ballot this Town Meeting Day will be for a three-year seat on the town selectboard.

Incumbent Brian Fox, the current selectboard chair, is running for re-election against challengers Joshua Clark and Ted Lylis.

Candidates declare for Bristol school boards

BRISTOL — On Town Meeting Day, Bristol residents will see only one contested election — a three-way race for a three-year term on the selectboard (see story here).

But there is a full slate of candidates running unopposed for seats on school boards. Write-in candidates do sometimes win elections.

Police get place to 'hang their hats' at Bristol Elementary

BRISTOL — For the first time in several years, Bristol police will soon begin keeping a regular but informal presence at Bristol Elementary School.

“We just want a presence there, and we’re offering whatever services teachers think they could use, whether it’s bicycle safety or Internet safety classes for the kids, any number of things,” said Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs.

BRISTOL — Alfonso Enrique Ceballos — known more commonly around town as plain old American “Rick” — recently returned to Bristol, his home of many decades, from a trip that was a homecoming of a very different kind.

The 67-year-old banjo player extraordinaire, whose group Daddy Longlegs is known for its eclectic blend of traditional music, has just returned from a trip to Cuba, a homeland he has not seen for over 60 years.
