Bristol-area fire departments launch food drive

BRISTOL — The 10th annual Fill the Firehouse food drive to benefit the Have A Heart Food Shelf in Bristol will take place Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Each Firehouse in the five-town area — Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro — will be open and accepting donations of non-perishable items. There will also be a drop off site in front of Shaw’s in Bristol.

Bedding catches fire at Four Hills

BRISTOL — Folks in Bristol may be been wondering why there was so much smoke coming from the farm fields off Plank Road on Sunday. It turns out that is the case of fire in some stored hay at the Four Hills Farm.

Chanin Hill explained in a social media post that the farm had “ been monitoring a pile of bedding hay for signs that it was heating up and sure enough with the addition of (Sunday’s) high winds the situation required action.”

Bristol Police Log: Bristol woman eyed in embezzlement

BRISTOL — Bristol police last week cited Rebecca Irene Freegard, 27, of Bristol for embezzlement.

The Bristol Champlain Farms gas station contacted Bristol police in September with a report that money had been stolen from the West Street business. Police determined that Freegard, an employee, had been converting the business’s money to her own personal use.

In all, $11,880 was taken.

A few weeks ago, Charlotte Sullivan visited the Mountain Health Center in Bristol for an appointment and walked out with a unique prescription — she had secured free vegetables for the next six weeks.

Bringing the Outside In: On view at Bristol's Art on Main through Nov. 12

The work of three different artisans — three different ways of interacting with the natural world — will be on view at Art on Main in Bristol from Oct. 13-Nov. 12 in the new exhibit “Bringing the Outside In.” An artist reception will be open to the public on Friday, Oct. 13, from 5-7 p.m.

Susan Goldstein, Krista Cheney and Aurora Davidson all work directly with live natural materials; however, what they each do with their materials is unique to their own particular curiosity and artistic vision.

BRISTOL — “It’s always been just five women,” said Anne Majusiak of Bristol’s One World Library Project.

But looking at the non-profit group’s contributions over the past nine years, it seems that five women (plus a coterie of helpful volunteers) can bring the world to Bristol — and show the local community the diversity of cultures and heritages it holds within itself.

Bristol Police Log: Police help U.S. marshals arrest Bristol fugitive

BRISTOL — Bristol police assisted federal and state law enforcement officials last Wednesday in apprehending a 29-year-old Bristol man who was wanted for escaping from custody more than three weeks earlier.

U.S. marshals, with help from Bristol and Vermont state police, on Sept. 27 arrested Kory George in Bristol. George had been wanted by the Vermont Department of Corrections and the Burlington Probation and Parole Office for escape since Sept. 5.

Sharrow to discuss how immigrants preserve culture and enrich Vermont

BRISTOL — Vermont is often described as culturally homogenous, yet nearly a third of Vermonters have French Canadian ancestry. There is a long history of European immigration to the state’s urban centers, and recent years have brought waves of new Vermonters from Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

In a free program presented by the One World Library Project, folklorist Gregory Sharrow will discuss these influences on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol.
