Vermont State Police Log: Minors cited for second-degree arson

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police last week cited two minors — one from Leicester, one from Brandon — for second-degree arson involving an Aug. 16 fire in Benson.

On Aug. 16, firefighters from the Benson, Orwell and West Haven fire departments put out five separate fires at the former Camp E-Wen-Akee on Root Pond Road in Benson. The state police’s initial investigation has determined that these fires were intentionally set.

There were no injuries as a result of this fire and damage is estimated to be under $25,000 at this time.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman loses money to phony 'grandson'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed on Sept. 23 that a local woman had been the victim of fraud that day. The woman told police that a person claiming to be her grandson asked her to wire him money because he had been arrested in Seattle.

The woman told police she wired four transactions totaling $9,493. But she subsequently spoke with her “real” grandson and learned she had been scammed.

Police warned the public to never wire money to anyone without being sure who they are.

Middlebury Police Log: Police look into embezzlement

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Sept. 10 began investigating the alleged embezzlement of $20,000 from the Marquis Theater on Main Street. Police said the theater owner has allegedly obtained a signed confession from an employee admitting responsibility for the crime. The matter was still under investigation as the Addison Independent went to press.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Received a report that a checkbook had been stolen from a resident of Middlebury Commons on Buttolph Drive on Sept. 10.

Vermont State Police Log: Logging equipment missing from Ferrisburgh garage

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police last week received a report of the theft of logging chains, load binders and a set of red clamp-on forks from the Ferrisburgh town garage on Little Chicago Road.

The theft is believed to have occurred between Aug. 31 and Sept. 11.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the VSP at 388-4919 or submit an anonymous tip by texting “CRIMES” to keyword “VTIPS.”

Bristol Police Log: Police help citizen avoid scam

BRISTOL — Bristol police responded to a report of a potential scam on Sept. 14. A senior citizen living on Mountain Street received a letter from a company that claimed to be based in California. The resident was told to send a fee of $3,000 in order to claim his prize.

The scammers didn’t get any money this time; police were contacted, and the resident was advised that if he sent the money he wasn’t likely to see it again.

Chief Kevin Gibbs said the police department had seen similar scams in the past, and victims were not always so lucky.

Vergennes Police Log: Man charged with unlawful mischief

VERGENNES — Vergennes police twice dealt with a drunken Bristol man in the early morning hours of Sept. 14, and the second time they issued him a citation for unlawful mischief.

Police first made contact with Daniel Fleming, 34, at about 12:45 a.m. after they were flagged down by an employee of the City Limits nightclub. The employee told them Fleming had been asked to leave the bar because he was drunk, and that bar employees suspected Fleming of taking a decorative fountain from the tavern’s entrance.

Bristol Police Log: Police find hard drugs, needles at Bristol home

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department executed a search at a Mountain View Street apartment on Sept. 9, finding 1,500-2,000 used hypodermic needles, heroin, morphine, and a substance that Chief Kevin Gibbs said may possibly be crack cocaine.

Police charged Amy Norton, 38, with possession of heroin and morphine. A second suspect, whose charges are pending while police await test results on the third substance, will likely face charges of possession of crack cocaine.

Vermont State Police Log: Flagger on road project hit by apple trailer

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police were called to an accident at the intersection of Smith Street and Witherell Road in Shoreham at approximately 3:51 p.m. last Saturday.

In their report, troopers said that 48-year-old Sheila King of Rutland was working as a traffic controller at a paving site there when she waved through a tractor towing a trailer with a load of apples. The operator of the tractor, Charles Kennett, 64, of Panton, had been making a left-hand turn onto Smith Street from Witherell Road.

Vergennes Police Log: City man cited for attacking his mom

VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested a 34-year-old man on Sept. 6 and charged him with domestic assault after he allegedly attacked his mother at a First Street home that evening.

Charged was Scott Murphy, who police said shares the home with his mother. Police lodged him at the Chittenden County Correctional Center after an incident they alleged began with a dispute over how much Murphy had been drinking.

Middlebury Police Log: Crashes, thefts, alcohol keep police busy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police dealt with mostly routine matters between Sept. 3 and 9, including car accidents, retail thefts, drunkenness, fake IDs and harassing phone calls.

In that week, Middlebury police:

•  On Sept. 3 dealt with a Buttolph Drive complaint of an unleashed dog harassing another dog.

•  On Sept. 3 responded to Porter Hospital’s emergency room to help deal with a potentially violent patient.

•  On Sept. 3 received a tip about illegal drug sales in Middlebury.
