Sand Hill Bridge replacement set

EAST MIDDLEBURY — The Sand Hill Bridge is on schedule to be replaced during the spring of 2014 at a cost of more than $2 million in a project that will close Route 125 through East Middlebury for 40 days.

That was the word on Monday from Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials and representatives from the engineering firm of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB), who were on hand to explain the span replacement plan to around 25 people at a meeting at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church.

Brown proposes eight-lot development in East Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board on Aug. 13 will take its first official look at plans to build an eight-lot planned unit development on a 20-acre parcel off Lower Plains Road in East Middlebury.

What to do about the river?

EAST MIDDLEBURY — John and Theresa Anderson bought their home off Grist Mill Road around seven years ago. Among its many assets: A backyard spacious enough for a horse ring and a border with the Middlebury River.

The river, however, has now become a mixed blessing.

A series of soaking storms — punctuated by Tropical Storm Irene last year — have at times turned the placid river into a raging juggernaut, careening against its banks and spilling into portions of the East Middlebury community.

Local historians to salute Civil War veteran

EAST MIDDLEBURY –– The East Middlebury Historical Society is hosting an open house Thursday, June 14, to display its exhibit for the Vermont History Expo before moving it to the site.

The Expo is held at the Tunbridge Fairgrounds next weekend. The theme for this year’s Expo is Vermont in the Civil War.

East Middlebury Historical Society’s Peggy Peabody said Vermont played a bigger role in the war than most people realize and the town itself has a close connection to the war.

Officials spar over impact of river work

EAST MIDDLEBURY — A group of federal, state and Middlebury representatives met on Tuesday to discuss the future of the East Middlebury stretch of the Middlebury River.

The meeting came in the wake of last August’s Tropical Storm Irene, after which the town of Middlebury put earthmoving equipment in the river and started dredging to repair damage and guard against future damage.

E. Middlebury passes river petition

EAST MIDDLEBURY — More than 100 Middlebury residents have signed a petition that urges local, state and federal governments to cooperatively get the wheels turning on a mitigation project to prevent future flooding on an East Middlebury stretch of the Middlebury River.

Middlebury seeks river security

EAST MIDDLEBURY — The village of East Middlebury was evacuated, basements were swamped, bridge abutments were exposed and the critical floodwall below Grist Mill Bridge was compromised in the flooding from Tropical Storm Irene rains on Aug. 28. Fortunately, East Middlebury didn’t suffer the kind of crippling blow from Irene that Rochester, Hancock, Granville and many other towns got.

Route 125 in Ripton could be open Saturday

RIPTON — State transportation officials on Friday said Route 125 from East Middlebury to the Hancock town line could be open to local traffic as soon as Saturday, Sept. 3.

The road suffered several washouts in last Sunday’s Tropical Storm Irene-related flooding. Traffic was rerouted via the Dugway and North Branch Road.
