Town keeps pressure on Ferrisburgh dog rescuer

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday upheld an emergency health order against the occupant of 2512 Sand Road based on what the town’s health officer called in the order “an imminent and substantial public health risk” due to a rat infestation.

The order was directed to property tenant Sheila McGregor, who has operated the Heidi’s Haven dog rescue operation at the site. Her keeping as many as three-dozen dogs in a 912-square-foot ranch home with a one-car attached garage has generated neighbor complaints for at least a decade.

Mediation set to resolve Ferrisburgh dispute over clear-cut trees

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh town officials, the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm LLP, and representatives of both parties will sit down on April 27 with Middlebury mediator Michael Marks and try to resolve the dispute that arose when the farm a year ago hired a contractor to clear-cut trees and brush from a three-quarter stretch of Arnold Bay Road.

Ferrisburgh selectboard Chairman Rick Ebel earlier this week confirmed the meeting had been scheduled and said he hoped the process could produce a resolution with which both sides could be happy.

Ferrisburgh dog rescuer faces sanctions; witness brings rat to selectboard meeting

FERRISBURGH — As voices grew louder and one Sand Road neighbor accused another of lying at the April 3 Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting, Board Chairman Rick Ebel had already warned that he would call a recess to calm things down before another resident held up a dead rat in a freezer bag.

At that point Ebel — and probably many of the 30 residents at the meeting— had seen enough.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh and Panton residents will have a chance to dispose of hazardous household waste locally on May 19, instead of having to take the garbage to the Addison County Solid Waste Management District transfer station in Middlebury.

At some point the trash district also plans temporary drop-off stations to serve two groups of outlying towns; one hazardous household waste collection day will serve Lincoln, Starksboro and Monkton in the northeastern part of the county, and the other will serve Whiting, Goshen and Orwell on the southern end.

Ferrisburgh land back on market, but broker says Act 250 could be obstacle

FERRISBURGH — A 34.91-acre parcel in Ferrisbrugh next to Vergennes is formally back on the market, but its listing agent said it could be a tough sell due to a four-year-old Act 250 provision.

The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday last week signed a new agreement with real estate broker Duncan Harris of Burlington’s Kingsland Company to market the property for $375,000. That’s the same asking price that has attracted three buyers, none of whom has been able to close a deal, since 2011.

FERRISBURGH — Sand Road resident Lauren Fisher told the Ferrisburgh selectboard last week the barking is worse in the summer.

“It’s all hours of the day and night,” Fisher said. “It wakes us up at 2 a.m.”

Family friend Ziggy Comeau described how the smell hit her when she got out of her car in the Fishers’ driveway, a few yards away from a small ranch home that hosts up to 30 dogs.

“My eyes were burning,” Comeau said. “It was bad.”
