Ferrisburgh wildlife program on tap for Oct. 21

FERRISBURGH — Vermont’s Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Planning Biologist Jens Hilke will present “Where the Wild Things Are,” a program and conversation about local wildlife, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Community Center and Town Offices.

The event includes a historical look at the region and discussion of who lives here, current issues, and what can be done to protect vital habitat.

Farmer finds good crop for county's clay soils — rice

FERRISBURGH — Boundbrook Farms and Good Companion Bakery owner Erik Andrus didn’t see himself as a commercial rice grower a decade ago when he set up shop on a 110-acre Ferrisburgh farm that lies a mile or so east of Vergennes.

In addition to founding what is now a successful bakery, Andrus was convinced he wanted to establish a new small-farm niche. What he had in mind was wheat for his baking and maybe barley for Vermont’s microbrewers, not rice.

Rokeby to host apple talk, book signing

FERRISBURGH — Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh will celebrate its apple heritage with author Rowan Jacobsen onSunday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m. Jacobsen, a nationally known food writer, will talk about the 123 varieties he profiled in his new book,“Apples of Uncommon Character”— many of which once grew at Rokeby. A selection of apples will be available for tasting, too.

Formalarie joins Mobius board of directors

Manure pit sparking notification questions

FERRISBURGH — The newly built satellite manure pit on Ferrisburgh’s Middlebrook Road continues to spark debate about not only how it was permitted, but also the larger question of how dairy farmers’ increasing use of satellite pits should be regulated.

The single biggest point of contention is whether neighbors of proposed pits should be notified before ground is broken.

New manure pit sparks debate in town and beyond

FERRISBURGH — Neighbors of an almost completed Ferrisburgh manure pit are upset about its potential impact on their quality of life and about the pit approval process, and they have protested to the Agency of Agriculture, the Ferrisburgh selectboard and their elected state representatives.

The farmer and state officials say the pit not only follows all regulations, but it is environmentally sound and sited as far from neighbors as is practical.

Ferrisburgh Day to include unveiling of new town garage

FERRISBURGH — This year’s Ferrisburgh Day, which will arrive on the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 12, will be doing double duty.

Not only will Ferrisburgh Day give residents of the northwest Addison County town a chance to gather and get to know each other better, it will also serve as the official unveiling of the town’s new $1.05 million, 5,940-square-foot, six-bay highway garage. That building was built next to the former town garage, on Little Chicago Road across from Ferrisburgh Central School.

Annual regatta raised $1,000 for Maritime Museum

FERRISBURGH/CHARLOTTE — A record 26 boats, hailing from Canada to southern Lake Champlain, took part in the third annual Diamond Island Regatta on Saturday, Aug. 22. The benefit race, sponsored by the Royal Savage Yacht Club (RSYC) and Point Bay Marina (PBM), raised more than $1,000 for the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM) in Ferrisburgh.

Farmer ready to fire air cannon to protect crop, but talks with neighbors set

FERRISBURGH — Although there is still time for a negotiated solution, the Ferrisburgh farmer who upset his lakefront neighbors a year ago by firing a propane cannon to protect his sweet corn crop said this week he is prepared to use the cannon again as soon as next week.

Wayne Stearns, owner of Crazy Acres Farm on Schoolhouse Road, said if the flock of starlings that lives on his farm starts attacking his corn, he is considering deploying a cannon that in 2014 fired thousands of times a day for about a month.
